If i change a file name on a video file

That depends on the encoding of the movie and the compliancy of the dvd player. Renaming the file is o.k. Doa is probably the best. Make sure the movie is not encoded with qpel switch, as no 1st generation player supports this.

Thankyou for your fast response!!!! I have a friend who has a philips dvp642 and shouldnt it play any vid file xvid encoded with mp 3 because there were sound problems like skipping or something? So I wondered if the title was to long? In nero it has a setting for only up to 30 charachters???? If the title of a movie file is to long can this effect the player? Should i slow down the burn speed? Man.........I was hoping for just pnp im not about to start reencoding movies!

So what is the best standalone dvd player for all formats now? and for the cheapest price. I sure hope his player isnt dead on arrival. I told him to buy it if it doesnt work im going to look bad.

Is there a web test file for this player in xvid.

If it is a DivX/XviD video use GSpot so you can post with more information, some of those files may be using non-standard mp3, personally I re-encode them to Dolby Digital AC-3 supported by most DVD players. But since you don't want to re-encode them, use AVI Audio Decompressor to decompress audio to PCM which doesn't require any codec to play audio. If this still doesn't work, maybe you can find another copy.

sure it would play.
i like to say to rename the file to something with 3 characters at least to about 32.
my divx player from phillips is awesome it plays old cds from years ago 99 ish that i had some smr codec on it.

geez i feel like a handicap person walking across the street with all you guys helping is awesome! Ok i use FUJI media and im gonna try that gspot thing now.......strange name that is! So i take it that some mp3 can be like bootleg codecs or something? Is it a pain in the rear to reencode these movies? Im also bringing over a ton of divx files that i have burned over the years to see what's up with the player.

crackerjacker from reading online stores and reviews about the philips it's either hit or miss with this machine. From what i read there's some sort of power mod that people do with a soldering iron??

I have a philips also, but I have never had any problem with long file names as it will drop some characters to fit anyway!

As to your audio, was encoded with lame?

I have not use FUJI brand disks before, personally I use TDK or RiData. But maybe someone else had use that brand before, hopefully he/she can tell you!

see post #8 thats the audio file but thanks for the tip on long file names! I think what i'll do is burn a few different files and see what happens then after i come back tonight I'll report what's going on and what plays what doesnt. I think Fuji is supposed to be pretty good when i used to burn divx it could do overburns. media i dont like is memorex not sure about others but using TDK in the past has been problem free as well.

The reason I ask was it encoded with lame? Is because the audio codecs on your computer can play but Philips player may not.

Thanks for hookin me up! I went over last night with a whole slew of divx/xvid files and everyone we tried worked. So it must have been just that 1 file.

Things to watch out for in DivX/XviD videos for DVD Players:

1. Lame mp3 codec won't be supported by DVD players, but almost all DVD players support AC-3.
2. Audio encoded in 44000 Hz mostly likely won't play on DVD players, most support 48000 Hz.
3. Blank medias.
