    Starting with the obvious.

    1) See if your ISP has a newsserver carrying the binary newsgroups

    2) P2P programs generally won't give you 2mbit/s down. Don't expect to download lots more
than you upload. It depends on the popularity of the files you are downloading.
Expect to queue for days or weeks to get rare files.

3)2megabit/second is your downstream speed. You upload capacity will be lower than that. You need
to set your p2p programs to limit upload to about 80% of the upload capacity of you connections
or you uploads may choke your downloads.

    4) Don't use zonealarm.

    5) Can your p2p clients receive incoming connections? If you have a NAT router or connection sharing system then you need to do some reading and configure portforwarding. You may need to configure your firewall.

    >Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give more information, which p2p programs, what speeds are you getting etc.

Hi, I'm having similar speed problems with my p2p programs, I have a 1Mb connection on a brand new comp, much better than my last and are getting really slow download speeds, i have zonealarm and have turned it off, but it did not seem to make a difference.

one freind suggested i use only windows firewall and another that i might have a very well hidden trojan or something eating my bandwidth, but i've run all my security applications and come up with nothing.
if i'm on Bitcomet and Ares and are having these problems but am also on Soulseek but have no speed problems then what could be possibly be happening???????

    Help me, I like downloading!!!

Get rid of ZoneAlarm. Even if it is turned off, it still kills P2P. I had ZoneAlarm Pro and ended up having to remove it to get good speed. Try the My E-trust firewall- it works great with P2P. You can get it from Computer Associates free to home users at www.my-etrust.com\microsoft if you are running windows. You can also turn on the windows firewall- it works good also.

The reason you have a Problem with some of the P2P applications and not with others is the way the application works. BitTorrent opens up multiple connection at one time-5, 10, 50 or a couple of hundred even. ZAP is not made to handle that many connections at once. Even if you limit the number of connections you will have problems. When there aren't a lot of seeders/leachers in bit torrent it will work okay with ZAP, but as the number co connections goes up, Zone Alarm slows down until it mires up. With SoulSeek, there aren't that many connections to deal with- only a couple of hubs so ZAP can keep up with the connections.

I have a 3 meg cable connection and get over 2.5 meg on bit torrent downloads with Azureus, which means it take less time to download it than to watch it.

    Hope this helps.

    You shouldn't use speed.

It can cause a heart attack...

thanks charlesmelissa, i have removed the zonealarm completely and am now just using windows firewall, but am still only getting a max of 25kb's, does this ZAP (i dont know what this is and have never heard of it, excuse my ignorance) affect ares and shareaza (shareaza just ground my computer to a complete halt until i had to turn it off by the mains) because both worked fine on my old computer but not this one!!
    again thanks for the help!

Before the walls of flame consume you, I suggest you use the search function in the forums. Just about any issue you can think of will most likely have been addressed, and future posts you will most likely be flamed, told to google, use zp's search function, or if you are lucky, be refferred to a particular thread.
