    Question LCD Monitor w/Analog Only

I just bought a new Dell 19" LCD of Ebay, but when I bidded on the item, I didn't pay attention to the fact that it didn't have the DVI input.

My Video card supports DVI and I know that I can buy a DVI adapter, but I'm wondering if buy using the adapter, will it convert the "Analog" signal to "Digital" signal?

I bought a DVI to VGA adaptor earlier this year from http://sewelldirect.com/DVIAMTOVGAF.asp so i could dual head without shelling out for a new monitor with DVI, my video card has one VGA and one DVI and both monitors are VGA.

it will convert the digital DVI signal to analog VGA

Oh, is that all it does? I was hoping that it would still give me the Digital signal. Guess I won't beable to go with the DVI signal unless I get another monitor.

    Damn, Damn, Damn!!!!!

Well, I just read a review on CNET http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3174_7-5136369.html

It is comparing the diff. between Analog and Digital and it states that, basically to the naked eye, now days, the average user would not notice a difference. Is this true? Basically, I would like the DVI option, but if it really doesn't make much difference then I think I can settle for what I bought!

I was looking at some other forums posts, and from what I can determine is that, although the signal right now is a "Analog" output to the LCD, The LCD actually converts the dignal back to DIgital and that it what you see on the screen is a Digital Picture. So, Since my Video card has a DVI out port on it, If I use a DVI male to Analog Female adapter, connect the DVI adapter to my video card, will it spit out the digital signal out to the LCD?

From what I remember, there are several versions of those DVI connectors that you see at the back of your video card. I could be wrong, but those connectors are DVI-I which contain both a digital and an analog signal.

So with those adapters, what youre probably doing is extracting the analog signal from the DVI-I connector and feeding it through the regular VGA female plug. At that point your digital signal is lost, and when the LCD screen is reading it from the VGA signal and converting it back to digital data, its NOT the same data that would have digitally come out of the card, its instead the LCD screen's interpertation of the analog data.

But like you said, you might not be able to notice. A lot of people, including me, still love and use CRT's which if not all of them, are mostly analog and look great!

    EDIT:

Here is a small guide I found on newegg.com:
