How to set maximum bandwith limit HELP

I have 2 computers sharing the same internet connection. What i want to do is set a maximum bandwidth limit for one of the PCs, is there any way i can do this. I use internet explorer, Windows 98, the internet connection is shared using a wireless network, the PC i want to set the limit to is connected directly to the internet (not wireless). Can anyone please help, if more info is needed then please reply. THANK YOU

hmmm u may need to invest in a decent router

but even then most will split the bandwith on a first come first serve basis

ive never tried limiting bandwidth to an entire machine just seperate programs

you say you can limit bandwidth for seperate programs, will this work for internet explorer and msn messenger

nope but these are lowbandwidth applications unlees u download alot from and ftp or http server

but u can limit the bandwitdh used by p2p programs very effectively

u can disable file downloads easily in IE but anyone with knowlege can turn it back on

if u have xp pro u could use the administrator account and use group policy to disable the internet control panel and downloads

but if the user has an admin account also then they could still use google to figure a way around it

the major downside to this is thses settings will affect the entire machine regardless of user accounts

i use these settings to protect my family machine from my brother downloading crap (he is 10) and also use the hosts file and a huge list of banned sites in a vain attempt to try to moniter his usage of the net

luckily that particular machine is in the living room so he is never alone when on it

I have the same problem, a younger brother, want to make sure he is not downloading
Anyway, everything you described in the above post, is there a tutorial on how to do this

as i said u will need xp pro if u want to use the group policy option

but it may be overkill

other wise just look in the options an in the security options i think (i use firefox)

should be easy enough to find :)

if not, google is your friend :)

Be specific man! Are you talking about for peer to peer network or a LAN? Are you using a wireless router? There is much wireless HD these days. Are you using a proxy server?

Here is a decent proxy server software for Windows. I suggest using a router. Also, you could buy a minimal machine on ebay for less than $100, and run a linux server on that. Here you will be able to issue commands reguarding qos.

Also, if you are not using a router, and are using a PC for NAT, your scenerio will not work. How do you expect to limit Internet bandwidth to the PC which your wireless gets access from? This makes no sense. Go buy a router with qos capability.
