    Page file

    Hey guys,

I don't know if this is a silly idea, but I have an abundance of small 4 to 10 gig hard drives that people have given me and I was wondering if I installed a smaller hard drive in my computer and made it the swap file would it increase my computers performance? They are the same speed, 7200, as my 160 gig drive. I have my 160 partitioned into C:\20 gb, D:\30 gb, E:\50 gb and F:\60 gb. Windows is on my C drive as is my page file currently.

Swap file on a different drive than your OS is a good thing although you might not notice much of an improvement.

sell them on ebay make a little extra cash
A world of invisible people. We pass them without seeing them, as casually and indifferently as we pass our own reflections in store front windows. Do they really live among us? Or are they citizens of another country, a vast and teaming gulag of the dispossessed. No, don't turn away. Look in their faces. Do you see your brother? Your mother? An old friend? Someone you went to school with? Someone you once loved? No? You didn't see them? Not today. Tomorrow you could.

In theory it will help, though I doubt it will be noticeable.

I tried back when I bought my first 80 gig drive but I didn't notice ANY inprovement at all and it was 10 gigs. I say use them as a back up drive. Store a fresh copy of your OS just in case you need 'em. I've got two 10 gigs in my closet just waiting for the day.

Depends on the amount of RAM you have and how often that pagefile is actually being accessed. If you have around a gig of RAM, it is unlikely for Windows to ever use the swapfile (but don't turn it off). If you have 128MB and you're trying to run XP, it could definitely help.

Add the hard drive on a different IDE bus . . secondary

    Start > Run > compmgmt.msc > Storage > Disk Management

Make it a Basic disk, format NTFS.

At the top RIGHT click on Computer Management and select Properties

    Advanced > Performance > Settings > Change

Click the C: drive > NO page Files > SET

Click the new drive letter of the small drive in the window till it's highlighted

    System Managed Size > SET

    REBOOT

Then go back and recheck it

DO NOT use that drive for file sharing!!!
