    Is this normal?

    Hi,

I'm currently downloading a 9 gig torrent with more than 5000 peers but less than 400 seeds and dropping as the hit and run merchants complete.

Usually I get DL speeds in the region of 90 - 150 kB/s but with this one its averaging about 30 kB/s sure it gets up to 70 once in a while but it dips down to 9 more often.

Is it normal to have these kind of DL speeds with such a low a ratio of seeds to such a high volume of peers?

Initially I was also seeding a couple of torrents but I stopped them, to see if there was a relationship between upload and download speeds.

BTW I'm using Azereus, Port set in the 16000's, connections limited to 60 and upload speed limited to 20 kB/s. My connection is 2Mbps Down, 256Kbps Up.

P.s. I've been running this torrent for several days already and it should complete within the next 24hrs so its really for future reference that I'm asking. Anyway I've got some serious seeding to do to get a fair ratio on this one before I remove it.

Well I dunno what grades you got in math classes, but 400 seeders for 5000 peers isnt exactly great.

Just do the best with what you have, dont saturate your upload speed, and see if you have 4226 errors.

Also, just because there are 400 seeders doesnt mean youre connected to any majority of them.

That was the point, while there is a low ratio of seeders to peers (its wavered between 0.065 to 0.090 during this torrent) I would have thought that the volume of peers re-distributing what they have downloaded would have made the speed of the swarm greater than it is.

But I guess not, so I suppose the answer to my question is yes its normal!

One tweak that I've tried since posting is to play about with the number upload slots for this torrent.

As I mostly seem to be downloading from peers that I'm uploading to, I tried increasing the slots from 4 to 8 and the download speeds seem a to be up by about 15 kB/s, however when I tried 12 slots they dropped off again. Could be coincidence but back at 8 slots the download speeds are better again!

Anyway should be completed in <4 hours now.

    Cheers

Youre on to something . .its called upstream saturation

never max out your upload bandwidth

    true

I have the "global" max upload set to 20 kB/s against a connection max of 32kB/s but I suppose an additional 4 upload slots could cause a suffient increase in comunication with the tracker to saturate the upstream.

    Thanks
