Aol is once again responsible for spreading the spam it claims it has prevented.
Jason Smathers was an engineer at AOL's Dulles headquarters. AOL is a unit of Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) He was charged under the new federal law banning unsolicited and deceptive e-mails. Smathers, who is 25, admitted stealing the list with 92 million AOL subscriber screen names and selling the list for $28,000 to another man, who then sold it to spammers who used it to send out an estimated 7 billion spam e-mails pushing products including herbal sexual enhancement pills.
