    being caught downloading movies

do most people get a warning after they've been caught downloading? i.e a warning from your ISP. or does the RIAA/MPAA just go and sue you right off the bat

i think you're pretty much done once they find out that you've done it. you know in the previews of the movies it says like "10,000 dollar fine to anyway copying the movie and selling it" or whatever.

Most ISPs will send out at least one warning. I have had two warnings from mine.

Usually that is the case and I would imagine that will continue to be the norm in the future. However, just because you haven’t gotten a letter yet doesn’t mean you’re safe. Your IP address is visible to every one who connects to your computer.

If you share movies you are at risk albeit a very small risk but it is still a risk.

I've never recieved an e-mail from my ISP concerning my movie downloadings..

Maybe it's the private trackers, maybe my ISP doesn't care...but then I haven't checked my ISP email inbox in 15 months....

I recieved a warning from my ISP a few years ago. One thing many people don't realize is that networks like edonkey share partial files while you're downloading. I knew it, but at the time didn't figure it was a big deal. I got the letter for sharing partial files.

Heheh, I can imagine what would happen if any ISP in this country tried harassing customers for downloading... :) Hell, the major ISP here had a huge media campaign with ads and billboards featuring a grinning guy saying "With this service, I can download a movie in 15 minutes!"...
