Incoming TCP Connections

I recently went from dial up to DSL. I now get no more downloads - my computer apparently doesn't accept incoming TCP connections. I've lowered my firewall and reduced my Internet security to low. Still no downloads. Help! SBC Yahoo DSL support told me its a Dell issue. I don't wanna call Dell cause the Iranian computer nerds don't know jack.

are you behind a router now? you'll need to forward the needing incoming connections to your PC now

A couple of things to try.

Firstly, try using a Primary connection. If that still fails try changing the TCP port setting to a different number between like 1 and 64,000. Still no luck go into settings and check "unable to send UDP data on any port" and try with both primary and secondary connections.

A lot of DSL modems I've seen recently have built-in NAT, which effectively is a "router." Open a command prompt and run ipconfig. See what it says your IP address is. If it's 192.168.*.*, then you are behind a NAT and will need to do some sort of port forwarding in the modem's web configuration.

(or you could just use a secondary connection in WinMX :) )

Would I lose the DSL download speed using a secondary connection? How do I open a command prompt?

No you would not lose DSL speed by using secondary.

The only reason Winmx wants to make DSL and fast cable broadband users select Primary is because that setting uses your upload bandwidth to help other people connect to the WPN and also handles their searches. You will lose ablout half your upload speed by selecting Primary.

Run primary if you can because winmx needs more users who help the network this way but do not think that it helps your speed out. It helps the network as a whole.

Don't know if you still need help with this, but I was in the very same situation -- just got SBC Yahoo DSL, couldn't get any uploads at all to work, and very few downloads. What's working for me now is that I completely uninstalled WinMX then reinstalled it (well, I went with 3.31 rather than 3.53). Worth a try.

(I also have the free version of Zone Alarm, and have no problems there.) Good luck!
