Daylight-saving extension draws heat over safety, cost

A move by Congress to extend daylight-saving time for four weeks to save energy has prompted an outcry from parent groups and the nation's airline industry, which warn it could be dangerous and costly.

Lawmakers from the House and Senate agreed Thursday to include a provision - part of a larger energy bill - that would start daylight-saving time three weeks earlier, the second Sunday in March, and end it a week later, the first Sunday of November. Kids would have an hour more daylight for trick-or-treating on Halloween.

"This is a huge victory for sunshine lovers," says Rep. Edward Markey (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., co-author of the bipartisan measure the House passed April 21. The change would become permanent in spring 2007 if Congress passes the overall energy bill, which is far from certain. President Bush says he wants an energy bill, but his administration opposes an extension of daylight-saving time.

Do you realize how many millions of devices and programs have daylight savings programmed into them?

If this gets changed, it's going to be Y2K all over again (I wouldn't expect crashes, but time inconsistencies all around). Think of all of the programs and devices that won't be updated.

What gets me, is how anyone thought we could ever save daylight? Daylight Savings? It doesn't matter if you get up an hour earlier or an hour later, there is still the same amount of sunlight in a day, depending on the day of the year.

Everyone seems to hate it. It seems to cause all sorts of changes to people time schedules twice a year and they are always grumbling about it. People do this twice a year, every year, and yet they are still late to work come change day. It would seem the ruckus caused by this termoil would be noticed in the GNP at some point. Yet we hear no politician grumbling about they are stealing from the GNP like you hear of some of this other organizations we are all familar with.

    What gives here?

Since you get up at the same time, year round, whatever you do, don't ever change the time on the clock! *grins*
When I pray, I find that I am talking to myself. Might that mean that I am God?

I can't even see where it saves energy. I mean you get up earlier so what do you do in a dark house? Turn on the lights, right? Then you get home earlier and its hot so what do you do? Turn up the air, eh? Now multiply that by a sizeable portion of the populace and it doesn't look like much energy savings to me.

Wonder if they have any of those bottles for sale yet that let you save that daylight for winter? At least that would cut down on needing flashlights...

    Spelling & grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Similar examples would be dog walking time or book reading time. Since saving is a verb describing a single type of activity, the form is singular.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue, and Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Part of the confusion is because the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, but it is not as politically desirable.

Daylight-Saving Switch May Cause Tech Woes

NEW YORK - When daylight-saving time starts earlier than usual in the United States come 2007, your VCR or DVD recorder could start recording shows an hour late.

Cell phone companies could give you an extra hour of free weekend calls, and people who depend on online calendars may find themselves late for appointments.

An energy bill President Bush is to sign Monday would start daylight time three weeks earlier and end it a week later as an energy-saving measure.

    Mainers Embrace Daylight Time Extension

PORTLAND, Maine - John Rossignol says: Let there be light. Who can blame him? The winter sun goes down earlier in the day in his northern Maine hometown of Van Buren than anywhere else in the continental United States.

That's why you can count Rossignol — and most other Mainers — among the fans of Congress' decision to extend daylight-saving time by a month beginning in 2007.

But he asks: why not make it 12 months a year? With daylight-saving time ending at 2 a.m. Sunday, most people turn back their clocks and set the stage for early darkness.

My dad turns the clocks back in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday. My house is confusing right now... some clocks are changed, and others aren't.

So who decides what time it really is?

It could really be 3:47AM and they are just lying to us.
