    My ipod is buggered

Arrgghhhhhh my iPod is buggered. I downloaded iPod updater to get my firmware up-to-date, firstly, it didn't recognise the iPod. Then it recognised it but said it was not suported by the Updater so I clicked restore, thought there was some corrupted files. Then it said it failed to restore because there was a write error and now its flashing the 'Do not disconnect' BUT ITS TURNED IT INTO MONOCHROME IPOD!!!!!! It is supposed to be 30gb Photo ffs. What can I do?
    Thanks

You can reset the thing usually, dont know about the current click wheel color pods, by holdin gdown the menu and play button at the same time.

Also, some problems are solved by letting your iPod battery run out COMPLETELY(such as, let it run out, and then leave it for a day without charging). and then recharging it and restoring it.

    Thats all I know.

    Leave it to recharge fully?

Oh my god its so fucked, it doesnt even charge through the power supply. If I plug it in my PC it shows the do not remove thing, but its in monochrome and looks all different animations.

The worst thing is the Apple site, its impossible to find support.

Hmm... follow my simple, easy steps.

    - Calm the fuck down. It's nearly impossible to fuck the ipod up during a flash, because you can recover almost every single time, thanks to the ipod bootloader not getting fucked by the flash software.
    - You need to charge it with the fucking AC adaptor.
    - After charging, reflash with the right damn software, you probably grabbed the wrong updater, and try again. Make sure you get the new firmware that is compatible with the photos.

I have the 30GB photo. I tried updating with the older updater and freaked just like you did, since I did it on the first day I bought it "oh great, i fucked it up already". I grabbed the updater off the CD because apple had an old one still up... but the newest updater from the apple.com site works fine on mine (added podcasting support too).

I used the updater from the site. Is there more than one? Because I could only find the one.
The AC adapter doesn't charge it, it doesn't show ther charging symbol, when I turn it on it shows a folder with an exclamation then turns off straight away, without charging. I tried the manual for the eclamation thing and it didn't work.

This guide is meant for uninstalling linux from your iPod, but so long as you can still see the iPod in 'My Computer,' this should fix the problem. Once you've changed the hex value in the file, make sure you use the proper update, or you'll have to start all over again.

edit: before you do any updating, tell us what generation your iPod is. If you are unsure, describe how it looks from the front. IE, is the scroll wheel grey, are there 4 buttons above a white scroll wheel, etc. Given that information, we can find the correct update for you, so you don't do the same thing again.

I don't know what generation it is, it is iPod Photo, isnt there only one generation of these? Now they are just iPod colour. It is 30gb, click wheel. I can't follow those instructions because my iPod shows up as (D:) but when I click on it, it says please insert a disk. Thanks for helping

Photo iPods are 4th gen I think, but they have their own firmware.

I hope you have all of your music backed up elsewhere. If so, I suggest you try reformatting your iPod. Right click the ipod (D:) in my computer and select 'Format...'

Dont fucking even try to install linux on the ipod photo, it wont work.

This is the newest iPod Photo flash - http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...r20050626.html
This is the original iPod Photo flash - http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...r20041020.html

I currently run the newest one on my 30GB iPod Photo.

The exclamation point means fucked firmware update, and it not staying on means the battery power is probably low. Try charging it for say, 6 hours using the AC adaptor (dont charge with the PC). Then, try holding menu and down for 10 seconds when you start it up to reset it. Then connect it to your PC and try reflashing.

Wow wonderboy2005, arent you a fucking fountain of disinformation today. If he does that, it not only will fix nothing, but then he's going to definately have to use the updater, and then format it AGAIN with the apple utility. (It will erase all of the system files, not just his music).

Do you even OWN an iPod?

First of all, yes I do own an iPod.

As for the linux thing, you might want to read it a little more careful. I NEVER told him to install linux on his iPod. The guide that I linked to is a method of UNINSTALLING linux. The reason I suggested that was because following those steps fools your iPod into thinking that the firmware is outdated, and thus needs to be updated. This process will erase linux partitions if there are any, but it also resets the firmware, which is exactly what needs to be done.

On the other hand, I highly doubt your method would accomplish anything. If the firmware is corrupt, resetting the ipod won't do anything. That would be like restarting your computer to fix a corrupt install of windows. The problem will still be there.

As for formatting the iPod, I agree its not the worlds greatest idea. However, if it is successful, he would atleast be able to access it from within windows. And no, he would not have to reformat it, so long as it is innitially formatted with fat32. Files would have to be put back on the drive, but the update would take care of that.

However, if the iPod just locked up, or had a random error (unlikely) cold booting it might work. Give it a shot - it won't hurt anything, but don't be supprized if nothing changes.
