First time this has ever happened to me;
I was using eMule to download some music and movies and one night they caught me. They caught me uploading a movie on eMule (I share everything I download) and they contacted my internet provider and they cut me off.
When I called to ask why I got cut off, they told me what happened, and they said they would reconnect me, but next time it happens I will get a 30-day suspension from their internet, and then a third offense would cancel my account.
I forget the name of the organization that caught me, but Ive been downloading/uploading for a few years now and Ive never got caught till now. Howd they catch me? Do they only catch you uploading stuff, or can they catch you downloading stuff too?
Also, are there some programs they can catch you on and others they cant? How do I avoid getting caught again?
Well they cought you cause you where shareing something that you did not have the rights to share(upload)
and the only way you can keep yourself from getting caught again is not to share....
kindof puts ya in a bind if ya like downloading and shareing what ya have..
someone will be along soon enought to either correct me or say I'm right

Your right for the most part. But if you use Usenet you never ever upload unless explicitly set aside time and bandwidth and effort to do so. Therefore the MPIA or RIAA have a better chance at licking your ass then suing it.
So I could keep using eMule if I just disable uploading and dont share?
BTW, what is Usenet??
eMule slants against leechers and forces you to share partials.
Usenet=newsgroups is a huge network of mail drops distributed amongst the ISPs and other providers, it's a bbs-like format but rather than search through it that way you should get something like Grab-It or xNews to do the work for you.
if you want to continue sharing, grab peer guardian

It's not perfect, but they block lots of agencies from connecting to you. It's not perfect, but it's something keeping you somewhat safe.
If I can't use Usenet, what other program/network could I use that doesnt force you to upload/share and that would be safe for me to use?
Ares, Kceasy, limewire....don't force you to share partial files.Originally Posted by mike88nbd

You could also use an anonymous proxy. Make sure it doesn't pass your IP. Warning: proxies will slow your speed considerably (unless you're on dial-up).
Check out www.proxy4free.com for more info.
Also, always deny everything. Tell em you didn't do it, even if you did. Tell em, for example, that someone was war-driving in your neighbourhood, or that you are a proxy host for poor souls in some country that restricts internet access. Just make something up eh.

Any other programs that I can use that wont force me to share, that are safe??
