The U.S. Department of Justice is quietly shopping around the explosive idea of requiring Internet service providers to retain records of their customers' online activities.
Data retention rules could permit police to obtain records of e-mail chatter, Web browsing or chat-room activity months after Internet providers ordinarily would have deleted the logs--that is, if logs were ever kept in the first place. No U.S. law currently mandates that such logs be kept.
In theory, at least, data retention could permit successful criminal and terrorism prosecutions that otherwise would have failed because of insufficient evidence. But privacy worries and questions about the practicality of assembling massive databases of customer behavior have caused a similar proposal to stall in Europe and could engender stiff opposition domestically.

Beautiful. I think they should make copies of all mail sent out also....and store them for a year. Then they could go thru them at will whenever they see fit....
And they should put tracking devices on all of us....and store all the informations on our whereabouts for year. That way they could know where all of us were at any given time....so they could have that information at their fingertips.....so whenever child molestors and/or terrorists gather together they would know about it.
And also...they should record all telephone conversations and store them for a year.

I've seen that seriously discussed several times, and it's a really sobering, frightening thought. (I can just hear George Orwell saying 'I told you so.'
As to the article's subject: I can see the U.S. passing such garbage in the name of their 'patriot act' and for the purpose of tracking molesters and such. (but guess what they'd really be using it for?)
I'm thinking there are ways to work around it however.

i've heard that guy on the radio. and all i can say about him is he has a cult going on some where. he's crazy. All i hear from him is the government is going to take over all of us, be ready!!!, buy guns and ammo now while you can!!! they are trying to make it illegal!!! president bush is funding terrorism!!! Me personally, i hope the US is watching that guy, and watching close. He wants to start a civil war against the US. I've got news for him, if there was a civil war, it would be over as soon as Desert Storm was over.

Believe it or not, Big Brother has always been watching us! Yes, they already do record your phone calls. They have filters in place that record each word, such as to calculate how many times someone say's F*ck, etc.
You know, in my opionion, look at the movies that have been made, yes, they may be fictional, but!!! even though we may not live to see the day, it's a sad thing that some day, if the world lasts long enough, the world will be corrupted by the Government worse than it is now, people will be hiding and living underground. Think of this, do you have a grocery store "savings card"? well, if you do, guess what, those cards are not really to save you money, they are used to track you, track what you buy and eat, track where you shop. There was a guy sometime last year, that tried to sue a store because he slipped and fell or something, but they traced the items that he bought using his card number and found that he bought alot of boose, they called him an alchoholic and I don't think he won his case because of that. So that's why when I get one of those savings cards, I never fill out the application. I'll use the card for the so called savings, but I won't let them know who I am!!!
And think about this new technology that they may want to use to stop DVD piracy, the whole thing with having to use your finger print, etc. Think that's what they really wanna use it for? UMMM..I say NOT!!! It's really just another way to track you! Never been in trouble with the Law? If not, then they would not have your finger prints on file, but if you buy a DVD with one of those finger print devices, the Government will then have your finger print!
The world is getting to corrput! Time to move to another planet and start all over!!!!

Home land security and the patriot act are the worst things that could ever happen to this country. HLS(as i will call it) has more power than they know what to do with. They should be called KGB v2.0. They can do what ever they want and say its for the better good for the country.
And of course they will slap the spawn of satan word TERRORISM on it to make it even worse. Or even better WOMD. i laugh when i hear that sentence used. Weapons of mass destruction. I thought ALL weapons were design and supposed to cause mass destruction?

Why stop there? Daily random searches of private homes. Checkpoints on the highway where all vehicles are searched. Personal searches every time one enters or leaves a public building. "If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to be afraid of." Makes one wonder: Bush said that the terrorists "hate our freedom." Well, I guess they won't hate us any more after all our freedoms are taken away. An interesting way of fighting terrorism, heh?
