DivX releases new, high-quality video format

Upstart video technology company DivX released a new version of its digital video tools on Wednesday, claiming its quality matches or betters the latest rivals from Apple Computer or Microsoft.

The new technology, the sixth full release from the small San Diego company, is aimed at boosting DivX's role in the consumer market, and is designed for storing high-definition personal movies and even for distributing commercial movie releases.

The tools will be "interoperable with millions of DivX Certified DVD players and other devices," said Jordan Greenhall, chief executive officer of DivX. The video technology has "better performance, visual quality and wider interoperability than any other video technology on the market," he said.

DivX 6 also has support for DivX DRM and Video on Demand solutions ,That said we might finally get a online Netflix style DVD "unlimited' subscription service where you can get a certain amount of videos per week or month.

Greencine are trialing DivX Video on Demand and Burn to Rent but its not a unlimited service probably due to bandwith costs :they need to use Bittorrent but Dan Glickman wouldnt have anything to cry about if they did that.

Or get the k-lite codec pack, which has the pro codecs for free without all the spyware and crap. Not sure if they've included divx 6 yet, but I'd say give them a week or so.

Trying burning a ratDVD file un altered onto a DVD and watching on your TV, you cant do it, its a PC only format, and limited to those who are happy to watch movies on their PC, most of us arnt.

i'll take Divx/Xvid over ratDVD anyday the extra fetaures on a dvd are of limited value to most people anyway.

The "new technology" is just a vob (which is used for dvd's) like container which suports multiple audio/video files and a menu system. Ogm and mkv have bein doing what this "new technology" claims to for well over a year. Plus they're free, open source formats that have matured over time, unlike the proprietary .divx format. Also, unless someone makes a firmware update for your chosen dvd player (which woent happen) you cant play .divx files on your "divx" player.

UnRatt the file and its a DVD with minimal quality loss.

who uses 700 MB CDs for video anymore this is 2005?

Blank DVD media can be found for less than 30c a piece.

Mpeg 4 wasnt supported and is still has limited support and penetration in the consumer electornics market .There may be ratDVD players in the future its only been two weeks that this format has been released.

That the problem, you have to Uncompress to DVD format before burning. with divx & Xvid you can simply burn onto a CD or DVD and watch in a divx/xvid compatible player.

Considering the encoding time is an absolute enternity for DVD2RATDVD, i cant imagine the reverse is much faster!

    XviD > DivX > H.264 > WMV.

XviD will continue to be the King and the standard format on the scene.
