Does Your ISP have anything to do with bittorrent speed?

I used to own 1meg cable and downloads on bittorrent were great. I then went to 56k and download were downloading a 5kbs like they should. I know have 128K wireless dsl and the downloads are terriable. I was wondering if the ISP blocks filesharing. I dont get slow connections on BT, but also on KLR and Shareaza. The sources are always high and even torrents with high number of seeds still download at 4kbs tops. You think it could that the ISP has a block on fileshare programs? and if so how would i override this?

When an ISP decides to block filesharing, the only real way they can do it (as far as I know) is by blocking the port used by the software. Obviously you can get around that by changing the port your software uses. However, I don't think that's what your ISP did, since blocking a port would stop the software from doing any uploads/downloads.

There is some overhead associated with wireless connections of any kind, so be wary of that first.

As far as ISP's are concerned, usually just the port is blocked. However, there are several software/hardware solutions that can identify traffic by the packets that are sent.

Wireless is terrible, clouds above you or storms or hills and information not getting to your pc all the time, and re-requesting packets.

Yup, they determine what type of traffic is being sent and can heavily throttle the speeds, but would not block the apllications. Throttling of speeds happens with BitTorrent, and in some cases, Newsgroup downloads.

But why cant i download at max speed on programs like Shareaza but i can download from a direct link someone hosted?

the amount of seeds and your place in line has alot to do with slow speeds. if there is alot of seeds but slow speeds let it sit for a hour or 2 tthen it may go fast .

Who is your ISP?

Well, here's what I can tell you firsthand:
comcast = no restriction
cablevision optonline = restricted to 128kbits/s up and down on bittorrent (and others)
verizon = no restriction
