Intel Denies DRM In Pentium D

Intel Corp has scuttled a report that its new dual-core Pentium D processor and accompanying 945 chipset is embedded with digital rights management, which would prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of online content. An article by Computerworld in Australia had cited Intels Australian technical manager Graham Tucker saying DRM will be a feature of Pentium D and 945. Kari Skoog, a US-based Intel spokesperson, told ComputerWire the article was incorrect and that the Pentium D and its chipsets do not have unannounced, embedded DRM technology. Tucker reportedly told Computerworld at the processors launch in Australia that [The] 945g [chip set] supports DRM, it helps implement Microsoft's DRM ... but it supports DRM looking forward. He also said the DRM technology could not be retrospectively used with files that were not compatible, according to the article. Skoog said many Intel products support several existing copy protection or content protection technologies. This includes support for DTCP (digital transmission content protection)-over-IP, which is a copy protection mechanism used to distribute content from one device to another within a home network (as opposed to DRM, which applies to online content). DTCP-IP was developed a couple of years ago by Intel, Toshiba, Hitachi and Matsushita. She also said that in the second half of 2005, Intel would release an updated graphics driver that will also support additional content protection technologies including COPP, HDCP, CGMS-A.

so the real question is...if this chip has the DRM they were saying...can we still rip the cd's (digitally) and make the mp3's with your standard LAME encoder? - I dont see how it would prevent this..

Just wait for the Trusted Computing platform. It will happen and you wont be able to copy DRM protected works. The DRM will be in the hardware, not in an easy to bypass area like the software.

I dont think you read what i wrote...cd's are cd's..my cd player in my car dosent decode any drm when it plays them back...

Isn't AMD part of the Trusted Computing Alliance? If AMD hasn't applied the DRM yet, they will in the future. I think they put money into the project, so they most likely will use it.

cdplayers do not have drm technology in them in the first place. The cdś themselves do, Or at least some sort of digital protection and those are the cdś that DO NOT play in a regular cd player! Thus making them (the cdś bd it music or other) complete junk. What is happening here is that now we are seeing a locking between hardware AND software to such a point where now when something is on a system it REALLY IS on there and that INCLUDES viruses and spyware etc.....

the days of just cleaning and rebuilding and even upgrading are well and trully over since we are now moving towards rental rathar than total ownership. Microsoft and intel owns you with DRM. thats the point of the mesage.

The statement by the Intel spokesman is designed to fool - the fact that the Yahoo reporter didn't make it clearer shows you what great journalists they are.

Furthermore, AMD and all other contenders will have DRM built-in. The overclockers.com article link I've put there discusses why.

He keeps going on on how the big players, be it IBM, Intel or AMD will incorperate DRM. Which is true. no one is going to argue with that and it is true Microsoft IS going to use it in their up coming OS Longhorn. But he then goes on and on about how Linux will be no different. Yet shows no, links, reason, proof, exsamples or anything else to back up his statment. Unlike the microsoft sinario since they already Do have software DRM enabled in the OS currently from win98 to winXPsp2!

Also there has been lots of proof already where by a system as difficult as the system as hardware and software related DRM has been cracked under linux. Can you guess what that is? The DVD system using DeCSS!

The fact that we have such a method and therefor proof under the open source community at least shows that we have some faith where it is due! Not everyone out there is out for cash and not EVERYONE is going to follow the main crowed that IS the beuty of OO and thus Linux!

Yes the hardware is a threat. But it is a threat by which OS you use. If your stupid enugh to use M$ then its not anyones fult that your hard drive got wasted by an Uber l33t virus/trojan/spyware built in with DRM!

couldnt they make the software/music/movies only play on systems with DRM checks so that linux ppl wouldnt be able to use it? that is what im expecting from them. 'course this is what i meant when i posted on the other thread about this chipped DRM: linux ppl, lacking the DRM checks of longhorn, will prolly make a DRM emulator so that the DRM files will play. and im also sure while they are at it, will make something that will allow it to be copied and shared too.

People emulate hardware all the time, even for programs like Cubase where a hardware protection is supplied with the software, there are dongle cracks. You can run Windows on a Mac and you can run a Mac on Windows. You can run Playstations, N64s... whatever. I think that however much effort and money they put into it, people will come up with a crack. Im not worried.
