Halo 3 parrying PlayStation 3 launch

Time quotes Bill Gates saying that Sony's next-gen console will "walk into" the Xbox 360 follow-up to the best-selling sci-fi shooter.

For months, the Web was rife with rumors that Microsoft would ship the sequel to Halo 2 for the Xbox 360 simultaneously with the launch of the PlayStation 3. Now, that has been confirmed--by none other than Bill Gates himself.

In next week's issue of Time Magazine--which features Gates holding the Xbox 360 on the cover--Gates mentioned plans for the release of the much-anticipated follow-up to the best-selling console shooter. In a parenthetical sidebar in the article, Time says the following:

"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks further official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Although such statements might be interpreted as grandstanding, such a maneuver definitely would have an impact. Halo 2 sold more than 6.5 million copies to date and is credited with doubling the subscriber base of Xbox Live from around 750,000 to more than 1.5 million. It is also credited by industry-watchers as one of the main reasons for boosting sales of the original Xbox last holiday season.

Bill Gates let that slip, is that right? Maybe he should talk to the development team first, to see if they actually have anything to offer. As far as I know, Bungie hasn't announced a new HALO yet.

Bungie Studios obviously has a lot more games to make, but we haven't made any announcements yet about what our next project will be.

Bungie cant say a damned word, they work for and are controlled by MS.

MS pays their bills, and Bungie wouldnt take a piss unless MS approved it.

If MS says shut your hole on this, Bungie will be the LAST people you will hear it from.

AND . . even if there wasnt a single damned piece of developement for Halo 3 at this point, if Bill Gates says there will be a Halo 3 by the time PS3 arrives, you can bet your ass there WILL be!

I know exactly what will happen, sony will release the ps3 and then microsoft will rush halo 3 like they did with halo 2 and then we will get a crappy game that people will buy cause they think its good :P

I wouldnt say they rushed halo2, come on it was like four years, i dont think it was a crappy game neither just a little overhyped. All sony has to do is release another GTA, that will counter halo3.

you got that right, gta is so awesome *drools* Although halo 2 is nice it didn't advance enough. If they took more time on it they could have made it better.

Same goes for half life 2 ( 2 quick and easy days for the whole sp game is way to little)

I know enough to do a little cross referencing and investigating.

You know just as much--or just as little, as you say--as I do. By that logic, your claims have just as much merit (read: none) as mine.

I didn't know Rick James had a knack for video games. Guess by not writing much anymore, you have time to analyze such things. Good points. The master of funk is well learned.

Another Xbox 2 vs. Playstation 3 post it seems.

First off I don't know shit about future shit and won't pretend too. Sure PS3 appears more impressive, as in possible specs, but that means nothing to me. GTA III and Vice are the shit (as in awesome) and so was Halo. Didn’t finish the latest GTA or Halo 2 however. Why? Halo 2 added little new and seemed to remove the jumpy creepy aspect that made the Original so addictive, or maybe I just got used to how the programmers think? Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was even worse, the map is too freakin big (AKA too much time spent not killing something) and many "missions" are pointless and frustrating. “Add content not size” (I realize this goes against conventional wisdom)

The synchronized release of Halo 3 with PS3 amounts to no more then a dick measuring contest as far as I'm concerned. One game cannot make a system as Xbox 1 discovered but I believe this latest contest may be in Billy's corner as "those with the gold make the rules" maybe not at first but eventually. Inevitably I will buy both but if the Xbox 360 is as easy to mod as the original it will get my vote. Then again I don’t shit about future shit.
