“The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced a newly-created program through which any record label can obtain a license for use of the logo for DualDisc, an innovative new product which combines music, film and video on a single, two-sided disc,” it says
Aaaah. So the RIAA doesn't own it. It's just another vacuous cartel ploy. This time, it wants you to buy a graphic that'll also prove you’re among the gullible who've been conned into thinking the RIAA in some way oversees the applications of dual disc technology, and that you need its permission to use it.
“The RIAA program was created to ensure consistent quality and avoid consumer confusion,” says the record label enforcerment organ. “Use of the DualDisc logo is available to any record label, independent or major, U.S. or international-based, for a nominal fee. Trial licenses are available for those labels that desire to explore market interest in DualDiscs for their artists.” Trial licenses? To test what?
"We are excited to do our part to broaden acceptance and understanding of DualDisc,” says RIAA president Cary Sherman. “It is another illustration of an industry that is working hard to bring greater value to consumers, both online and in record stores, with high-quality, value-rich products."
A 'trial license' is, "limited to two releases by Licensee and its Affiliates in the aggregate within a one year period is available at a cost of $100," says the RIAA. "A license that is not limited by number of releases is available at a cost of $250 per Covered Label, up to a maximum of $2500 per year.
"Even if licensee has more than ten (10) Covered Labels so that its license fee is capped at $2500, each Covered Label must be registered through the DualDisc Licensing Website to be covered by the Agreement."
why even bother with dualdisc at all? you could put the music tracks on the dvd side just the same as a movie

except the riaa refuses to allow it because they want to make money off their stupid dualdisc licensing gimmick

A DualDisc is not just 'cd music one side, dvd movie' the other.
Apart from the money making aspect its aim was to update the cd format by merging it with the DVD-A format.
Dual layer SACDs have been on the shelves ages ago with the recent reissues of the Stones and Dylan albums containing both cd quality audio /high quality audio.
This release is an attempt to increase the sales of DVD-A by including it with cd albums. The R.E.M reissues are DuelDiscs that have cd album one layer and DVD-A album + documentary on the other layer.
Yes its another con to make us buy albums we already own, but at least it offers something extra unlike minidiscs or UMD discs (both offer lesser quality for a similar price)
If the user doesnt have a DVD-A compatable dvd player they can still play the cd.
ONE disk is sufficent, since they artist rarely ever put 40 minutes of music on one disk.. They can easily produce two disc in one cd case.

That would be worth buying. Then again, what real gain is it, unless your distributing a dvd and cd at the same time.
They wont ever release a cdr/dvdr disc for consumers. It would make no sense to.
This format is just a way of getting people to buy something they wouldnt buy seperately.
yeah I rember the days of 20 song vinyl albums and Cds now its 10 and if your lucky 11 or even 12 Songs.
what if a company makes their own logo? i bet everyone who sees "dual disk" in fancy new letters will be totally confused and their head will catch fire and the RIAA will be like "i told you so ! " becuase that all makes total sence!
Am I the only one who wants just the music? I don't give a crap about the video...I'll record it off MTV or VH1 if I really want it. The same goes for the "out-takes" on the DVD"s. Look at most of them, and you'll know why they're "out-takes." And, what about the "bloopers" in the cartoon movies? How the hell can a cartoon character make a "blooper"? All of this is a futile attempt to make the consumer think that he/she can get the whole thing only by buying it at the industry's over-inflated prices. Someone will crack this "dual disk" for sure. That is, if the public actually falls for this multi-format scam.
Don't quite understand what they are trying to sell. Don't care to find out more about it. It sounds to me like a total white elephant of an idea, like the CD singles with videos on. Who cares for that? Not I.
