?? about limewire, can ppl get my data??

I realize this could sound totally idiotic....I've been downloading music for a while...started with grokster...it killed my system, went with kazaa light, came to hate that as well. Finally discovered limewire and to date and really liking it. HOWEVER, today, an internet friend of mine who actually works in computer security (and gets paid to try to hack into computers) mentions to me me that I don't really need to just worry about getting viruses, but about people getting data off my system that I may not want them to get. I haven't heard back yet from him. What in the world does that mean? Can they literally get into my computer? Is this a commonplace occurence to actually be concerned with? I have dsl and download at home, but I know verizon does have firewalls set up regardless. Any response would be appreciated.

Is there a "Shared Files" section of Limewire? If so, you should be able to look there and determine which directories are shared. Those directories that are not explicitly shared should not be available for others to download.

I actually have a "Library" which shows files I have downloaded from their site. The search tab option it allows are audio, video, images, documents, and programs.

I just didn't know if there was a backdoor way for people to be getting in my system though p2p sharing that is common??

Nah, the most common reason for sharing private files is ignorance. A lot of people share their entire hard disk and don't know it.

I think if it's not in your "Library", you're safe. Someone else who has used Limewire may be able to confirm this.

it is if you share system folders, if you are only sharing your default limewire download folder you shouldn't worry, unless you save personal files in the same folder.
they would show up in the library tab
thats what people see and can download from you

Go through all the folders in your Library Tab...look for anything that you don't want to share..than remove that folder. It is a common mistake for new users on P2P to let the Program Scan for you instead of you doing it Manually.

thanks to all for the feedback. I doublechecked. I only have the songs I downloaded FROM limewire in my limewire folder...I don't even have any of the other areas of my hard drive accessible from there whether they include audio files or not...so I guess I'm good. :-)

Again, thanks for taking time to make me feel a lot more reassured!

make sure you have the latest version and youre ok

Recent versions of the LimeWire client contain vulnerabilities that allow a remote user to access many or all files on a users machine.

    Vulnerable Systems:
    * LimeWire versions 4.1.2 up to 4.5.6 are vulnerable to File Disclosure
    * LimeWire versions 3.9.6 up to 4.6.0 are vulnerable to Directory Traversal

    Immune Systems:
    * LimeWire version 4.6.0 (File Disclosure)
    * LimeWire version 4.8.0 (Directory Traversal)

I have version 8.1, so am I also safe from file disclosure as well as directory trsversal (since I don't even claim to know what directory traversal means?)
    thanks
