I know that this issues itself has been discussed many times although I haven't got any solution reading those tips and suggestions. Changing of ports, firewall settings, switching to primary/secondary connection etc. It's all the same - both for winmx peer network and opennap.
Connection timeouts ruin my joy.
And what's the main concern is that it's exclusively WINMX problem. I'm quite experienced P2P user. I've tried all the major networks as well as bunch of minor ones and this problem persists only here.
For example. I use eMule a lot too. I've downloaded many files that had only 2-3 complete sources on the whole network. I even got a few that had only ONE SINGLE source and I still managed to get it. Ok, it took a while, but I never even doubted I'll get it. Not to mention the humongous ques got to wait in donkey network, they're measured in thousands not hundreds like in winmx. The network works very stable and as long as the source user comes online for reasonable amounts of time I have no worries.
The same with DC hubs where I haven't seen ''connection timeout'' message at all, even after waiting 3 days for some users who haven't any slots available. The same with Soulseek, Gnutella and any other network I've been engaged with.
On WPN it's tricky to complete a file if it even has 5-10 sources cuz it's regular occurence that they all will timeout before you'll got your turn. Quite impossible to start downloading from users with large ques without trading.
I'm sure it's not my or ''his'' connection problem. It's some fluctuations that happen on the network. For some reason the packets just don't get through causing timeout as a result.
I know, you will suggest things like..
1) don't use this network, use DC or whatever you like
2) propose a trade, don't wait in ques
..and I have answer to those ones
1) for some strange resaon WPN and Opennap has some kind of monopoly for rare music videos; I use winmx for this reason only (why don't you people move to another networks)
2) I do that when I can, but many hours of absence from my pc makes it very uneffective way to get stuff
I don't expect to hear some signifcant solution for this, just voicing my frustration and sharing experience I have absorbed in few years using winmx.
Ok, how many freekin times do I have to put this down..
They are timing out because they are FAKE....The songs are put purposely on and on the other end its set up so it wont connect on purpose....you have to PING all the results and look at the pings....if they are are low (like near 100) and all the same number or all a close number then it is probably fake

"No problem!"
You're wrong this time, MacGyver. I know that 95% of people I try to download from are actually sharing the stuff I see in their filelist.
Reasons?
1) most of them have very distinctive collections of hard to find music vids which is not very usual for fakers
2) I hve downloaded from them before if I got lucky or traded
3) I never download mp3 on winmx; I use DC for this purpose
4) they have been on the network for a long time and theyr share has been changing all the time
5) I'm not talking about dudes with 246 in Q and no uploads running, not that naive I am
Well if I am wrong how come this trick works for me everytime???? What are you trying to download anyway? -- This tip is more for the newbies that post the same thing "how come I cant download on winmx" (tear....tear.....)
Personally I hate winmx...FTP's are the way to go...no ques....no waiting....high speed
=)

Just another way to filter WinMX bad files... If you sort the results by USERS If you see the same user listed more than once the file is going to be bad. Pick one that only brings up one unique user. Spread the word.. corporate bastard record companies suck.
My first post!
Hehe, I combined MacGyver and someone23554's methods, and it seemed to have worked. Although, lately, I have been finding songs where the connection times out more frequently.
Ahh. Cool. Me, being a newb to file sharing, I don't really follow you about how to find which FTP servers to use.. :(Originally Posted by MacGyver

I don't do anything underhanded, and I share most of my music, so I don't see why a lot of people would ban me.
There are fake files beinf distributed via winmx and there is a coupke of ways to get around this. They are as follow:
1.) When searching in Winmx for files there are 2 search boxes. the top one is where you put you song and artist you are trying to find. The second is a filter and to filter out the fakes you enter in this box either '-c:' or '-user' this will get most of the fakes filtered.
2.) You can goto http://www.p2p-revolution.com and watch the mini video tutorial on how to use it .. this is a database of song shared by normal users on winmx and has the feature of auto-downloading which means that a program will put a the file in your downloads list automatically
3.) Browse the person you are going to download from and if they have 3000 files and double or triples of songs then its a fake file server. SO DONT DOWNLOAD THESE AS THEY WILL TIME OUT

Hello,
I have been on WinMX for a good three years. When I tried to get on I had problems connecting. TMALSS (to make a long story short) I tried the patches and uninstalling and re installing the WinMX program. Still not working. Now I am getting some type of winsocks Program will terminate error.
I use dial up is that a reason why I cant get any luck?
Any help Thx in advance
You guys should try going to http://www.Oldversion.com/ and download one of the older versions. After you install it, install the patch from this site: http://www.winmxgroup.com/. If this patch does not work, try the one at this site: http://www.Vladd44.com/mx/. When this is done, get WinMX v.3.54 Beta 4, unzip it and replace the .EXE in the WinMX directory. Start WinMX and your speeds and available files should improve. If you are on Dial-Up, you need to get a better connection to the net. I would reccommend Cable.
