DIV 3 help! - i'm suuuch a newbie!

Okay, i've downloaded my first move that says (Div) .avi and i get the sound but not the movie through media player. i downloaded something called GSpot v2.21 and ran the movie through that because apparently i need a codec? so it came up telling me that the codec couldn't be found and the name it has is Divx 3 low motion.

Can someone tell me, in really basic language, where to go to install what i need to watch these movies? Are all movies that i download going to require different codecs?
