Despite fears that internet piracy would dent its profits, Hollywood has had a buoyant year.
Worldwide revenues from cinema tickets, videos and DVD sales, as well as television rights, reached a whopping $44.8bn (£24bn) last year, up 9% from 2003.
Record DVD sales fuelled the increase, up 14% in the US and 46% worldwide, but most other sectors did better than last year. The only exception was cinema ticket sales outside America. These did fall, but by a relatively modest 1%.
The figures are from a report by the Motion Picture Association, part of the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents Hollywood studios.
So much for their reason for suing their customers.

i know its wishfull thinking, but i hope they look at thes figrues and see that they should back off on us. if its not hurting them, why spend the resourses on us?
They won't stop suing anybody. The MPAA are acting on the requests of pigopolists like Sony and AOL TIme Warner. If the returns don't match the costs, they MIGHT consider it, but you can bet you left bollock that someone, somewhere has a job that depends on spreading the FUD around about P2P to his own bosses.
All this will do is prompt a report stating that if they HADN'T started the legal actions their profits would have been further dented. And lets not forget the shareholders. They have to be seen to do the right thing by them, otherwise these speculators might lose confidence and put their stocks into something more reliable, like Pensions. :p
There is only one thing that will stop these lawsuits and thats a decent and easy to use anonymous P2P app, which will eventually be outlawed and blocked within the first two years of its life anyway, under the guise of T.W.A.T. Or The War Against Terror. (Oddly suitable acronym that).

There is a big difference between revenue and profit, the revenues may have gone up, but I bet the profits have gone down.
Film production and marketing costs have skyrocketed, the piece only mentions the revenue figures; it would be interesting to see the actual movie profit figures for the major studios.
In other news, a recent study suggests that the sale of "VCR's" has not actually hurt the MPAA.
We really need to try harder. We should start local community groups to teach people how to use diffrent p2p programs.

if the studios are afraid of piracy stealing their profits, maybe they should start focusing on making movies that people may actually 'want' to see. personally i'd rather sit in a comfy theatre with good sound and see a movie than on my computer screen, but there aren't too many movies i'm dying to go see, cause they look terrible. up the quality (and that doesn't mean up the budget) and maybe you will see more profits
