    limewire problem

i got limewire for Windows XP and i got Service pack 2 installed

it been going good till i had to re-formatt my HDD and re-install everything

    but thats not the problem,

the problem is that when i go onto limewire and search for files the program kills my internet connection and i gotta reboot my whole pc. to gives this little icon on the task bar and says "your computer has limited or no connectivity" or whatever

Well, make sure you're running the latest versions of Limewire and Java (get Java from www.java.com).

Also, there's a "feature" of SP2 that only allows you to have 10 TCP/IP connections at once - that's Microsoft's way of stopping the spread of worms. Yeah, much better idea then just fixing your crappy OS! Ok, I'll stop ranting - to fix this problem, go grab the patch from www.lvllord.de .

That's not exactly right, and most people misunderstand it.

It only allows you to have 10 half-open connections. A connection is half-open when it is connecting, and is fully open when the connection is established. It's quite an effective solution at limiting the effects of DDOS attacks, which doesn't have anything to do with bugs in the operating system.

The only problem is that it sometimes (not as much as people think) hurts Bittorrent connectivity, and even eMule from time to time (though, I noticed that they now have an option to limit the number of half-open connections per second within the program to correspond with the tcpip.sys limit).

You two are both pretty on the spot about things, but I think the key word in the complaint is that he "had to re-formatt my HDD and re-install everything" and he says that is not the problem, but I know with your Jedi Knight skills, you arent convinced.

It's just as likely that after he reinstalled, he doesnt have the proper NIC drivers installed, or is using a USB connection.

Ask him for more info, such as if it is cable or DSL etc. . . .

Did you get your static LAN IP set back to the same thing you had it before (with port forwarding)?

It's been a while since I've used gnutella...but don't you have to have a port forwarded to use it effectively?

And before you reformatted, Limewire was working as expected with SP2 installed?
