download speeds for bittorrent - help

    Hi,

A recent user of bit torrent applications, I'm finding it near impossible to get the download speeds that people seem to be getting.

I've had a look through most of the faq on how to change this but dont seem to be getting anywhere with port forwarding or changing, even disabling, the firewall.

I understand that if the torrent's uploaders only have small bandwith then I might be affected by this but its all files so guess it not that?

Did read about windows limiting connection attempts but how safe is the patch to surpass this? Is it necessary?

I'd be grateful for any advice as I'm getting no more then 10KBS for files, very frustrating.

At the moment, bit disapointed that bittorrent doesnt appear to be user-friendly. Any advice gratefully recieved.

I will continue to check the forums for advice .....

I've not used it some time but some of the public BT sites are just slow because people tend to leech a bunch of files at once. I always had the best success with Azureus. Try to find an up to date site and find a file with a lot more peers than leeches to check out your speed.

Ta for the reply. I started with BitTorrent ver 4.0.1 and then tried ABC, both are dead slow.

Fair point about the leeching, wonder if its that. What are other readers experience of the software out there?

Any recommendations? Prefer software not bundled with ad-ware etc, unless the software is really fantastic. But will give that Azureus at whirl.

Anyone know ought about the windows patch for XP service pack 2. Is it safe?

    Again, any views gratefully recieved.

I never really had trouble w/ download speeds but since changing the max connections to 100 a few months ago I have noticed no ill effects either. I have had my share of slow torrents but I'm guessing it has to do w/ seeders that have capped their upload speed or have multiple torrents that they are seeding. I have been getting some awesome speeds through some "private" trackers though.

    Not bad:

    hello,

I think things are going ok - i'm getting a 20 odd kbs download speed and the upload doesnt really go beyond 15.

Ta for help. I am behind the router but reconfiguring it, changing the ports again, seemed to work.
