hi i was just wondering if anyone had ideas of ways of getting around a fire wall so that you can use peer to peer software. i access the internet from college and they some how block the use of file sharing software. is there anything you could do to get arounf this? like register with some free unix sheel or anythig like that?
If you have a second residence outside the firewall, or just a friends house with cable/dsl, or basically access to any computer without firewall, you can set up a bouncer (proxy, whatever) yourself.
Otherwise, perhaps public proxies would work? I know some p2p software have options for proxies but personally I havent had to resort to that.

They block ports and may slow anything down or throttle others. Even monitor it where you could get busted.
You should know that if you are accessing p2p from a university you are a major target for the RIAA. That uni's are among the very first places they look for busting folks for sharing. I would tell you it isn't a great idea from the uni internet access. At this point in your life, were I you, I wouldn't.
Instead get active within your uni with copyrights and the boycott of major music and major movie studio's. Help others to know about it as they face the same sort of problem you do. Why support some idiocy like sueing your customer? Give them just what they wish. Don't share their music, don't buy it, don't listen to it. Grant them the obscurity they wish. In the process, if it is done world wide and for a long time they will either decide that p2p is free advertisement or they will go bankrupt as a result. Honestly, either would be acceptable to me. I resent the methods they are using and think that financial terrorism that is being practiced by them is absolutely shameful.
most universities have an on-campus DC++ hub, find it, or if there isn't one start your own, set the IP filters to only accept connections from on campus (many universities have either a full class A or a full class B block of IP's) then if you want set the hub to quietly (not listing reasons, just a sudden drop) drop all connections from computing services IP ranges if you can find them out. on a fast LAN DC++ is amazingly good
