There have been a few rummors floating around and i asked Gwren to clear it up.
First rummor is that Ants is going to connect to new Java Mule- False
Second rummor Ants is going to allow optional direct connections - True
This is what Gwren said:
You can get an alpha verision here:No conenction to jmule will be implemneted, but it will become possible its coding.
Infact I'll code a system to have real direct connections among couples of nodes that require this.
THis will NOT prevent anonymity of the whole net, but only of every node that decides to suscribe the
"direct connection" service. This make sense... infact in our net we all accept the banal thing that is
you reveal your ip you are crap, you have compromised your anonymity but we (the other 29 nodes) are safe,
cuz revealing your ip you don't compromise our situation...
So what I'm going to implement is just an IP field in query messages, if it is empty the net will work as usual,
but if you put your ip inside it (compromizing your anonimity) you will be able to do direct connections with
other nodes available to reveal their ip too.

This verision will not connect to the versions, this is only an issolated test version to help Gwren see how well it works and debug.

I don't see what the problem is. You do not make a direct connection unless both the uploader and the downloader BOTH choose to make a direct connection for a particular file. If you don't like the idea, don't click the option on. This is an alpha version, so in the bata version perhaps gwren can put a pop up that asks "do you realy want to compromise your security"
This feture is good because when ants grows some people may just want to share home movies or their political views or something. In that case they do not need to be anonymous. Also in the current enviornment, the RIAA/MPAA lawsuits are largly ineffective against individules but the seeders of prerelease movies are very much at risk. So in this case the Seeders of prereleases can use the anonymous fetures of Ants to spread a movie out to a dozen or so people anonymously. Those people can then choose to share anonymously or non-anonymously.
The point here is that more choices are better then less choices, do whatever is right for you.

DC is good for two friends that trust each other to be able to trade files.
Now they will be able to do this without switching to a different p2p program.
Then when they are done they just switch Ants back to anonymous mode.
The box is grayed out because you have to stop ants to switch it on or off.

Gwren has published a more detailed explanition about where he is going with this:

I think this has been previously disckues as "taking a flight to the Ant hill" The general concept is that non-anonymous nodes can lay down some sort of pathway for anonymous noes to run over. This is still an idea in development.

Gwren said that now with the optional dircet connections it would be posible to write some code to bridge Ants with Jmule. but that has not been done yet. But posible in the future.Originally Posted by ABC_thellookoflove
This would be a good way to seed files into the emule network anonymously. MPAA seems interested in going after the seeders right now. This potentialy may add a level of anonmity to jmule, cause it really confuses things for people trying to track people there. Confusion works in the favor of the p2p users :;)
