    Commercial break

my son was watching nickelodeon, and i was sitting nearby, and heard a segment between commercials about a "real life" person i heard her talking about the music she likes, and looked at the screen

here's the scene: girl, age 13

"well yeah, i like avril, and <whatever>, and the spice girls (they're like really old), and <name>, and <name>"

all the while, she was flipping through a cd wallet, naming them off--the point of this story? THEY WERE ALL BURNED CDS! there were no original discs! memorex, maxell, you name it, with sharpie marker that says "avril lavigne" etc.

i really like the message of futility portrayed by AOL/viacom, as on one hand they promote these pop idol whatevers on their awards shows, but show the reality that 13 year old girls are just as happy with a free copy

and now back to your regularly scheduled program

17 USC § 1008 Prohibition on certain infringement actions:
No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the noncommercial use by a consumer for making digital musical or analog musical recordings.

that doens't really mean it's all pirated though, lots of people i know keep their original CD's at home and only bring around burned CD's to protect the originals from theft and damage.

i suppose, but it isn't like they explain that on the commercial

right now millions of kids are seeing burned cds on tv portayed as "normal" while the industry says the opposite

who are they going to believe? a kid like them, or some jerk in a suit?

It's like that a 13 year old who likes a band or group isnt going to have 13-18 dollars per cd that comes out by that band. They may have access to a computer and to a community of kids at school who download stuff or tell people what they got off the net.
