The evil dead series is one of my favorites. It's technically a mix between horror and comedy but it's still great.

A good classic horror film to me would be Night Of The Deamons...

Then there are the obvious classics out there.

John Carpenter's The Thing should be in every horror movie collection.

The DVD is packed with extras too. Well worth even buying it, if that's the course of action you take.

Get "Dead alive", also known as "Braindead" in europe.

Extremely gory horror-comedy movie. I dunno if it was intended to be funny as well because it was made in Australia in the 60s.

    Quick hit classics:

    Creepshow 1 and 2
The Howling series... the third being the most disturbing... marsupial werewolf birth... eewwwww.
Texas Chainsaw massacre, and they didn't do horribly on the remake.
Cabin Fever- the "fingering" scene being the highlight of the film.
The Evil Dead Series including Army of Darkness- the first tried to be scary, scared the shit out of me as a kid, but 2 and AoD were just funny.- must have
The Thing is a definite, still fucks me up
The Shining - still dont' get the dog face thing, and that causes me lost sleep.
28 days later- thought the execution was off, but the concept was excellent
your big three Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th
Legend of Boggy Creek- it sucks, but shows the roots of the Blair Witch

Try some asian stuff too... The original Ringu was good (and there are at least 4 more variant movies), Dark Water also by Hideo Nakata (Ringu), anything by Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer), the Ju-On series (aka The Grudge) - there's 4 of those too.

You mean this one right? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103873/

By Peter Jackson of LOTR fame... that's the funny part. (Well I suppose Sam Raimi went from Eveil Dead to the Spiderman francise...)

The year is 1992 - was it set in 60s Australia? Didn't see anything about that...
