using grabit too?
or xnews?
also try to see if u can starting using nzb files that way all the headers are easy to download.
What client are you using? If it is grabit then it is a known issue that grabit chokes on large groups. Check the website forums. http://www.shemes.com/
Downloading large groups usually requires a lot of memory, but it depends entirely on your reader. I use newsbin, I have 512, and I still chugg when dling the headers for a.b.dvd
I use Newsleecher and don't notice any problem pulling headers.
Do you have a really slow net connection? I know that when I connect to some (like dvd rips), it can take a while to download all the headers - even with my broadband connection. Does it do this with smaller ones? As for the RAM issue, I can't personally speak for it (I have a gig of ram), but watch the hard drive light on your computer - is windows swapping a lot when you download the headers?
you should consider usig nzb, to avoid the struggle of all those headers, i heard good thingies about it.
nfonews.com supports it now

Its a power issue. I have the same issues when downloading groups with say more than 300,000 headers. Granted I have a piss ass amount of ram on this old machine but it takes a LONG time sometimes to sort the headers. On my new laptop its ALOT quicker with a 1.67GHz CPU and 512 RAM.
my isp newsgroup servers if i try to update alt.binaries.* it takes so damn long if I do it from even a few weeks ago. good that alot of stuff gets posted tho :) and I get free access. adelphia still sucks but newsgroups and leaving port 80 open is good....
Hey, I have a gig of RAM and a 2 GHz processor and it really takes a while for such heavy groups (like the one you stated).
And whoever posted about GrabIt's inability to deal with very large groups is correct.
I recommend Powegrab if you're looking for a free client like GrabIt (By free, I mean that you don't have to scour other sources to contain a "pro" version copy or a copy of a pay program).
Or you can go other client routes (Newsleecher I seen mentioned, and there are plenty others that are great).
Now, your computer "freezing" all depends on what you mean by "freezing". What OS are you using? Has the client crashed or stopped responding? Has the entire OS froze up?
More details.
You can't triple stamp a double stamp.
Thanks Everybody! Somewhere in your posts lies my answer .I appreciate your help
