I see many big dvd-r files on bittorrent that would obviously be of a better quality than others (i presume).is it somehow possible to use a dvd-r disk and burn these files on a cd burner?
I don't think so. I would have not bought a DVD burner if i could use CD burner.

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".
it is physically impossible. DVD burners are getting cheap. I paid $50.
If you're talking about movies, you could always downsample the video, but then you might as well just download the => 850MB versions. If its a game or app, then your SOL.
850Mb versions - how would i be able to fit that on a cd? please help
SVCD releases often show up as 850 MB because they're an image file.
Other than the fact that this is the way it is, I can't tell you anymore. I don't have any idea why they seem to fit.
So an 850Mb SVCD release will fit on a CD. Or should I use Nero to burn a "SVCD" and will it then fit? I have found many that state sizes of 690 to 699 so one would think they will fit but they are always too big in actual size to fit onto the 700MB CD's?
My understanding is that the images are burned using "mode2." You may want to look that up, but again from my undertanding, mode2 essentially removes the redundancy normally found on CDs. That means that on a normal CD, there are 2 or more copies of some bits of data. On a mode2 CD, those redundant bits are removed in favor of a greater capacity. The tradeoff is that mode2 disks are much more suseptable(sp?) to damage.
Another explination I've seen for the greater than 700MB images is that the image contains extra information on how the CD should be burned, eg the organization of the data on the disk. I'm not convinced that could take up an aditional 150MB though.
you could possibly look for a DVD rom emulator similar to the cd rom emulator deamon tools then rip the file with dvd decryptor to IFO mode then run autogk to encode the file to divx providing it is a movie. Or convert to some other standard video format using some other tool.
If you are just trying to back up the data you can use a file called jsplit to split the file into 700MB chunks of data and burn each chunk on a cd untill you get a DVD burner.
Other then that not really much of a choice.

Mode2 burning basically removed all the error redundancy that is built into the cd format. We use the space used for the error protection and it basically gives you more space to use. This works fine for movies because video is VERY error tolerant.
Most SVCD images you find will be 770-850MB. And they will 99% chance fit on a standard 80min cdr just fine.
But I like others recommend you get a DVD burner. I got my liteon 16X Dual Layer burner for 89.99 and its awesome.
Screw dual layer dont invest money in the new technology until they advance in it... No since in doing so really dual layer media is expensive as all hell and so are the drives pick up a liteon 16x without dual layer support for like 30 bux less or better.
Play it smart let other folks pay for development thats my motto to try to keep up with technology constantly you'd go broke trying to have the best and the fastest all to watch the prices drop like a dam ship anchor out of an air plane.

is "mode 2" an option in Nero? I have not seen that yet. Most of the time I try to burn the big files and I simply can't do it with Nero. Advice please?!
If you are burning CD Images (bin/cue mostly), Nero will automatically set it to Mode 2 for you when you go to Recorder->Burn Image.
Otherwise...the type option is in the ISO tab of the New Compilation window.

I'm thinking of picking up a few dual layer RW discs for data backups.
