You can't measure number of users by how many are on irc. ANts p2p now uses gnuttella webcache to bootstrap on to the network.

I am an end-user, not a programmer, but I like Ants, I had it installed already. I just want to express that PLEASE no need to promote it again and again. Had bittorrent promote like that? No. Bittorrent start with a few of p2p users too, because of it didn't have fancy interface, nor it include a file search engine. But soon after the end-users request for big file and speed, Bittorrent came right in the place. No excessive advocated of words. Even today, the official site is so ulgy, but Bittorrent just works!
Hornet, actually I think that Ants MAY BE one of stronge apps in anonymous p2p. But it need to be better. It need to be enjoyable to use. Keep saying it is "faster than what" or "superior than what" will not help.

The program should speak for itself. Clearly, it is not ready to do that just yet.
Ants uses the webchache to find people to connect to. Before connecting to Ants was done solely through IRC so you had a good idea of how many people were on Ants by how many people were in IRC.

The way ANts works is that when a search goes out, it goes from node to node similar to a gnutlella search.
However, when you choose to download a file then that file follows that same route back to you rather than making a direct connection.
So effectivly everyone is a middle-man for everyone else.
There is no direct connection between uploaders and downloaders.
ANts DC (Direct Connect) P2P works in a similar way except that users have the option to make a direct connection when file is found.
So in ANts DC users opting for direct connection are not anonymous, other users can see their ip address and files like a nomal P2P program.
However, ANts DC users could spoof their ip address within ANts.
A user could could use the ip address of a neighbour or trusted peer instead of their own address.
ANts DC could then instead of making a direct connection could use ip addresses to add new neighbour nodes and as the starting point to find new nodes to connect to.
(In other words use the IP address from the query results in "addneighbour" and "set routing point" procedures within ANts DC).
Using this procedure users can make one hop connections therefore making file transfer fast while retaining some security as they do not directly tell others their ip address.
This is ip spoofing in ANts DC.
I have written and tested code to do this and it works.
I have only been writing java for a couple of weeks so I've mostly re-used Gwren's code and classes.
You could have both an option for direct connection and ip spoofing within ANts.
You could use a flag (in query results) to indicate if the ip address is "real" or "spoofed".
If the ip address is a "spoof" address it can be used to add a new neighbour (i.e.used in "add neighbour" and "set routing point" procedure).
If the ip address is a "real" ip address it can be used to make a direct connection and also to integrate with other 2nd gen programs.
Gwren is really busy and under a lot of pressure but he has proved that having direct connections does not lower overall network security.
So ip spoofing should not lower network security for those who use ANts normally.
I have offered to send Gwren the code for using ip address from query results to add neighbour and set routing point, ip spoofing.
If ip spoofing is adopted user would have three options: secure slow downloads, one hop less secure but faster downloads and fast normal p2p downloads.
