    dvd drive goes crazy!

can anyone reccommend a good program or method to make my DVD drive spin SLOWER?

when it reads a DVD it's very loud and shakes, and sometimes the disc looks different like it's scratched or smudged after I take it out, so I don't want to put any in, because it's spinning them extrodinarily quickly. I'd like to lower the speed to maybe 8x.

    Thanks.

Have the same problem with one of my drives or similar it shakes during the idling process until it spins up...

Could this be why kaffine for linux the drive constantly switches speed when ripping mp3's... I think it was kaffine lol!

But at any rate what you have is a problem with your drive either the internals are getting worn out or it could be as simple as the drive being out of balance or a loose screw mounting the drive to the bay... As far as programs go they wont solve your issue another guy I know tried all kinds of programs till one day he slapped in his Diablo 2 CD and started playing online the cd was spinning up faster then usual and the cd shattered and bits of the cd came flying out of his drive ... I didnt think it was even possible but that just tells me how fast the dam cd's must be spinning up... So it costed him not only a new drive but a diablo 2 game as well which at the time was like 50bux...

I'd consider taking a look at your drive before something similar happens.

It reads CDs okay, but not DVDs. Maybe the brand I bought (which were cheap) dont work well or something.

If it is the drive, wouldn't it do the same thing with CDs?

I will clean it out, etc. It is only a $50 burner that is DVD+-RW

Most of my programs allow me to use different speed selection and the max my drive reads dvd is like 16.. and cd's 52x.. Sometimes if screws in the bay arent tight.. they can just keep shaking bit by bit til the screw undo's and then needs to be tighten.. My friend in Highschool had a car with a massive boom box.. The bass would shake screws loose and he had to retighten in insides once a week.. crazy.

I got a program called "cd speed " at http://www.tonec.com/products/cds/

I limited the speed to 1x (takes 18 minutes to burn, can read video data fine) -- it does not spin so loud anymore. I will get inside and tighten everything as well.
