SPAM is the term given to un-solicited junk e-mail. It essentially works the same way as with junk snail-mail in that someone gets or generates a list of addresses and send out mass amounts of whatever they want. Most SPAM is essentially ads for porn and other things.

There are ways to spot SPAM

If the subject line is incoherent ie. "Re the order you placed"

If the subject line contains your name but you don't know the sender

If the from says "undisclosed recipients"

If the subject line says words like "urgent, act immediately"

The thing to remember always is "If it sounds too good to be true it probably is"

You also might want to look into some sort of anti-spam tool. I use Mailwasher, which allows you to preview your messages and delete and evean bounce (return to sender) SPAM.

Hope this informaition hels you and anyone else confused about SPAM
