Alright, my dad has an AMD system that he built a couple years ago, and he's kept it updated semi-regularily. Replaced motherboard last november, new power supply after that, new processor this past week, new CD-ROMS, he's practically rebuilt it....
Problem: I just built my computer, used his computer for making boot disks, I shut his down a few times to swap out RAM sticks becauseI didn't have mine at the time and for using his monitor and keyboard, and for purchasing all my crap online... got mine constructed, and it works fine. Now his has gone to shit. After i finished my assembly, i had his shut down, power disconnected completely, put his RAM sticks back in, and connected all his accessories etc... Now his wont boot. First problem he had was a message saying something about loading windows and not risking damage to windows or his system. Then he got a Code 7 ?? there's been a few STOP ERROR'sx000000## <----(variating numbers). So we said screw it, he got a new processor (AMD Sempron) because his old one was 4 years old or something (I know, rediculous) took out the hard drive, put in a new one, and we wanted to re-install a new OS. So we made a set of 6 boot disks, have the XP Home CD, should be ready to go... well the boot disks stop on the third disk, because it says there is a corrupt file or something, and the CD wont boot (it's bootable) but that doesn't load properly because it says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys"
Now, when i built my system, i used the same Floppy Drive for my disks, and i can see that being a semi-problem, because when i tried the way of the 6 floppies followed by my "aquired" xp pro cd... the 6th cd was corrupted and i never got it to work. but then my brother pops up with a xp home bootable cd. and that one worked for me like a charm... so i was able to install xp home without a problem really, and since my own RAM had not yet arrived, I used my dad's RAM sticks, and they worked for me. So, he's got his Motherboard (which to me seems like an old, off model, that isn't compatible with much, in my opinion..) His new processor, his RAM sticks, which he has 4 of, a hard drive, a bootable cd for an OS.... and we've tried going to the Gigabyte website for possibly updating a BIOS to see if that could be the problem, but they're confusing as hell, and we aren't sure which file to download, nor how to do it. but that's what were trying next.
Here's his specs:
MOBO
Gigabyte 7vt600-RZ AGP 8X FSB400 Socket A VIA chipset 8235
CPU
AMD Sempron processor 2800+ Socket A 256Kb Cache 2000Mhz
RAM
Crucial 2x 256 DDR 2100 266Mhz
Hard Drive
OLD ONE THAT WORKED, HAS OS INSTALLED: 40GB Western Digital Caviar Enhanced IDE Drive WD400
NEW ONE W/OUT OS INSTALLED: SAMSUNG 160 GB SP1604N
Video Card: works fine, we both purchased brand new ATI 9800 All in wonder Pro, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, 8x AGP
My thoughts are possibly:
-Try to update the Bios
-Incompatible Components
-Bad Motherboard
-Bad RAM sticks(seems unlikely, because he's got 4 of them. but i did use them and swap them out a bit, so it's possible)
-Use different OS disk
I don't know, we have yet to update, or attempt to update the BIOS, and that could very well be the problem. I just want to see if anyone else has any direct solutions that they know of. I'm no expert, but i know a fair share i guess. and my dad built his computer a while ago, and it still seems as if he doesn't know wtf is going on with it, he's just a stubborn prat. anyone, if you can help, thank you much

ok, he's switched out all his ram and tried each one, he's tried updating the bios, he's tried a different boot disk #3, tried installing a 4 in 1 driver for the motherboard, tried his old hard drive.... so..... bad motherboard? that's what i think it is.....and.... i'm talking to myself

I'd give the bios a go and set the bios defualts then work from there...

Maybe it's the wrong CPU, that motherboard specs only mentioned Athlon XP/Athlon/Duron processors.
i think the your installation disc might be messed up, i got the corrupt files error when i was using a bad installation disc and also a bad CD drive, just an idea.
Maybe the shitty ass motherboard has something to do with it. Also, perhaps the power supply is an offbrand? Suprisingly enough, power supplies are pretty important components.
Next time do yourself a favor and get an nForce based motherboard.\
You can use memtest+ to see if your ram is really the cause of your problems.

Oh, oh, and visually inspect all the electronics for damage. Leaky capacitors, broken/chipped surface mount pieces, whatever.

definitely grab the latest bios update...if support was added for sempron processors, it would be in the latest bios.
definitely run memtest as well.

yea lately all my comps cant do a xp repair. just do a new xp install from cd.. u get to keep all the files, but need to reinstall all your programs..
if anyone cares, it ended up being the RAM sticks. apparently they got fucked up during all the switching around. (he had the system tested at microcenter)
