    video games and compression

Though it might not be the best quality compression it is the best compression to quality ratio I have seen so far and quite possibly the future of gamming...

Not really new news but interesting news as I rember back in 2001 when I stumbled upon the little demo that fit an enormous amount of audio and video into a 65kb file....

For those who have an intrest check out the demo's available at:

    http://www.farb-rausch.com/

The very first one that turned me on to this new advance was FR08...

Give it a look and see what your opinon on it is.

those are insane. I stumbled across that site a year or two ago and downloaded a 64KB audio demo and it blew me away. It has a total of 11 tunes, somewhere in the range of 50 minutes total. And it kicked ass as far as sound quality goes. It still amazes me.

    ***edit***

I just checked, and it so happens that the one I'm referring to is FR08 as well.

it's not compression, not really, it's all about mathematically generated data, in a way it's compressed, but they don;t start with a scene and then make it 64K, they start with 64K and try to do as much as possible with that 64K (or 100K, or 1 MB, or whatever the size limit is)

and BTW FR08 kicks ass, but be careful you can get stuck in some of the pillars, i guess in 100 K they don't have perfect collision detection, but then again it took 5 years for everquest to have collision detection work.

Compression is based off of mathamatical algorythms to compress original data so in scope it is basically the same aside from the fact that you are not taking the original source and compressing it but in all technical aspects someone could produce a game and they could use the mathamatical operations to produce similar results into a smaller file size which is actually compression in essance which is how I view it a new way to produce high quility video... Now once a codec is devolped if they plan on making a codec then it will be compression none the less and it would be very interesting to take note if a codec is developed for something like this it could revolutionize gamming but for not it is not compression though dam close but for lack of a better term at the time I used the word compression.

But, you are correct it is a format of its own... I bet once they created these exe's they used UPX to further compress the exe's as a side note.

I was in the Commodore 64 demo-etc. scene for awhile. They were demos with goodies from the phreak scene. It was fun, but then I turned 16 and got a car, job, and a girlfriend. Somehow free phone calls didn't seem quite as important as they had before.
