newbie problems with setting up emule

hey there,it's my first time using a p2p client like emule after previously only using other free software such as shareaza.

was wondering if anyone could explain to me how i can open up these tcp and udp port thingys that u need to download and upload properly.

i already read the help file on the subject and i'm still not sure how to open them up.i don't think it's a problem with my firewall either but you mustn't quote me on that.

if you could explain as you would to a child that would probably be easiest :)

having a firewall is useless if you don't know how to configure it :p
basiclly you need to allow incoming TCP on the TCP port configured in emule's preferences>connection
and UDP in and out on the one for UDP
and outgoing on any port for outbound TCP

what firewall do you use?

just a freeware zonealarm m8,is it possible to set these ports up properly and still be relatively safe surfing the net as well or will i be required to interchange between 2 lots of settings??

not sure what i'm doing,still in early stages of learning how this stuff works

don't know, i don't use zonealarm, but i think you just set ZA to allow emule to have access to the net.
But setting emule to access the net won't effect your internet explorer settings in ZA

zonealarm probably asked you if you would like to allow emule to be a server, and you probably said yes.

the next question: are you behind a broadband router?

i'm on adsl 1 meg a second with aol.sorry for being stupid but i'm not very knowledgable with regards to routers and tcp/udp ports.

i have an internal winxp firewall and norton antivirus 2005.i tried simply pressing the button in emule that opens up the xp internal ports and it told me it was succesfull,however it still keeps telling me that the tcp test failed when i try to test the ports,something to do with an ip cache or whatever.

i'd be gratefull if anyone could tell me what the hell they are and how to set them up for filesharing purposes.

is the dsl modem directly connected to your computer?

what brand of modem is it?

it's a bt voyager 105 adsl modem connected via a usb cable to the tower.

this isn't the precise model of your modem, but i think it could prove useful:

you'll have to forward the ports that emule is using to your computer.

i just have an adsl connection on aol through whats labelled local area network 2 with a winxp firewall that isn't even detected by aol on the signing on menu.i've already granted emule program access and despite entering the default numbers listed in the help files on emule into the 2 ports and clicking tcp and udp which i thought would open them up.

it just isn't working i can't even run the port test after hours of reading crap apout port forwarding n stuff that i just don't understand.

well if worse comes to worse you can disable UDP in emules settings, and disable "reconnect on lowid", you will still be able to upload and download to most users

in the first link i gave you it mentioned the address of a modem configuration page (which you will need to go to) at http://192.168.1.1

the guide i gave you will help you forward the necessary ports to your computer.
