My father just installed winxp, he had win98 before and everything worked well. But now the file and printer sharing just dont work. We are using a d-link DI-704 router, internet sharing works perfectly, so is lan gaming, but we can't figure out how to fix the file and printer sharing problems. In "my network places" i don't see any of is shared folders under "Local Network" and when i click on "view workgroup computer", i can see is cpu but when i double click on it it says : //(computer name) is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator bla bla bla.. :(
Right click on the folder you wish to share and enable sharing for that folder ...
Never share the root directories of hard drives not a good Idea example C:\
And if you are running a firewall make sure that the allow filesharing option or similar option is checked...
Some cases you need to make a floppy from each computer and exchange the information from one computer to the next windowsxp has an option on it to do so... I had to do this a while back...
Never keep file and printer sharing enabled if not behind the routers firewall ... not a good idea so for example if one PC is in the DMZ ...
Only use file and printer sharing and enable folders to be shared when ever you need to share a file dont keep it always enabled.
Just some tips hope it helps.
