Norton AV 2005 gives non-stop alerts with Shareaza

I've just spent the afternoon cleaning up my pc, ridding spyware, installed SP2 etc. but having done so, my previous version of Shareaza was not connecting.

I've since installed the latest version of Shareaza and it connected, but as soon as it did so Norton Antivirus started flashing up worm alerts, initiated by Shareaza, giving me the option of whether to permit or block. No matter how many times I choose 'permit' I just get the same alert about 3 seconds later.

I have added Shareaza.exe to my NAV exclusions, but it's still doing it. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than turning NAV off?

What is the exact wording of the worm alert from NAV2005 ?

A NAV Security Alert window opens, reading:

"Norton Internet Worm protection has detected a remote system that is attempting to access your computer.

If you've started a program that requires internet access such as online gaming, file sharing, or instant messaging, then select Permit to allow the program to continue."

Underneath the details box shows the date, time, path: c:\program files\shareaza\shareaza.exe, with a file name of Shareaza Ultimate File Sharing.

As I say, I keep selecting Permit, only for the window to pop-up 2-3 seconds later. I have checked the NAV worm protection settings and it is set to Permit for Shareaza.

When Shareaza connects it says my firewall might be hampering its performance, but Shareaza has also been configured within the firewall - as best as I can tell anyway. I don't seem to be having any problem with WinMX

You MUST be talking about Norton Internet Security.....man...is that the most shitty piece of software out there? Norton antivirus is good....Norton Internet Security just knocks me in the nads.

If you have NIS...rip it out and install a plain ol' antivirus program...

i think i can help you out! i had a similar problem as well after installing sp2. its to do with your xp firewall. you have to tell it about shareaza and allow it. go to your connection and enter the firewall configuration settings. from here go to:

1) -exceptions

2) -add program (find shareaza.exe)

3) -add port (name it Shareaza and then enter the port no. 6346 under UDP)

4) -add port (name it Shareaza and then enter the port no. 6346 under TCP)

this is how my computer is configured with shareaza, sp2 and nav 2005 installed

if it still doesnt work, disable norton firewall if its installed (xp sp2 firewall is better)

if you have norton internet security, get it out, it sucks seriously, you can hardly look at google without it worrying

The program I have is called Norton AntiVirus 2005 - that's all I know. As part of the security scanning features it has 'Internet Worm Protection' - which is on.

I've just turned that feature off and now it is working ok. But I don't want the feature off, so I set it to exclude Shareaza from detection - but it seems to ignore this when the Worm Protection is on.

i just checked my nav worm settings and shareaza isnt even in there, so maybe if you remove it

from the list and try shareaza again it might work???

From your first post, it sounds like you were just cleaning up a Windows install that had a bunch of viruses, etc. on it. Honestly, it might just be easier to completely reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows. I would lay money on it that you shouldn't have any more problems then - I'm guessing something was still let behind, and for some reason Norton is picking it up as Shareaza doing something.

Seriously think about it - I've spent hours trying to clean up spyware infections, just end up reinstalling in the end. It'll save a lot of headaches, plus Windows will run a lot faster and smoother.

Auggie - I just tried you're suggestion and immediately the same alert popped up. :(

However, I selected permit again, and for whatever reason - it's working. No pop-ups so far 90 seconds on.

The freeware version of sygate personal firewall does a mighty fine job I have had nothing but troubles with norton programs causing conflict on mine or friends or relitives computers I no longer reccomend there problems due to overwhelming complications they have caused since using the norton AV from the early stages like 400MHZ till now...

Norton is overpriced software use freeware by AVG for antivirus and use Sygate for your firewall...

Go to the safe programs list, remove shareaza and open shareaza, and then youll get a few alerts and then it will be backon your allow list, that should work, it did this to me but on Ares

Ahh - simply great to find good answers sometimes! I had exactly the same problem with eDonkey2000 V1.1 and NAV 2005... the window kept always popping up and the setting "permit" somehow simply wasnt remembered...

Ok - I did the same... NAV2005 OPTIONS - INTERNET WORM PROTECTION - PROGRAM CONTROL - and here from the list I removed "eDonkey2000" (where "Internet Access" was selected "Permit All")...

Then I started eDonkey2000 V1.1 again - and first time of course the same popup appeared again. I selected Permit again - but this time it was remembered and I didn't get asked about it anymore...

Thanks folks... sometimes so extremly annoying to spend 1 hour of my life for such crap... Nah, nice that we've got a solution now at least...
