hi everyone.
yesterday i was very worried when my friend told me something.
he said that with dc++, that the people who run the hubs can hack into my computer becuase they have my ip address.
now im comfused.
i have a router and am in passive mode and i thought that passive mode is basically a tradeoff (you dont give your ip, we give your less search results and files).
i quit using kazaa and winmx because of the riaa and i thought i found a solution in dc++.
but now i wonder if im really undetectable in passive mode.
p.s. i assume for the most part people arent going to hack but there is always bad apples out there.
can someone please shed light on this issue for me?
thank you.
If you have a router, and keep clients up to date, you should be fine.

Just because someone has your IP address doesnt mean they can break into your computer. Its like saying because I know your address I can now walk right into your house no problem. Its not true. If you have a wall around your property, lock your doors and windows, I wont easily be able to get in. Same goes for your PC. Run a good firewall, either a router with one built in or a software one like Zonealarm, and run an antivirus scanner to block possible trojan horses and your should be golden.
thanks for everyones responses.
just one thing i need to clear up: so its true that noone on dc++ can see my ip address if im passive and using a router?
by the way my firewall is norton IS 2004
I think that only the hub can see the IP, but I'm not sure about this.Originally Posted by meandyou2K5
Passive mode is only if you can't get a direct connection out through your router, you can achieve the same results.
See just by coming here, Zeropaid.com has your IP logged all admins can see it. The very nature of the internet is: your IP identifies your computer's address in the world, no external connection can be made without one.
Don't sweat it.
if you are connected to a DC Hub, the hub "knows" your IP address. passiveness doesn't hide your IP.
don't worry about your security, you have a firewall; you're fine.

Ask smart questions!
every person you fileshare with can get your ip address
connect to someone, go to "run", type cmd, type netstat -an, hit enter
there is that guys address, and the hubs you are connected to, and the adservers, and the website you are looking at, and other computers on your network etc.
a firewall doesn't do you much good if you put a bunch of holes through it to share files (but the constant popup messages keep you company and give you something horribly repetitive to do)
can the riaa or the movies association sue you for sharing in the hubs?
Well if they can see your ip addy, and what file you are sharing, then yeah I would suppose.
public hubs, yes.Originally Posted by meandyou2K5

but the ones that ask for a password are considered private right?Originally Posted by cpugeniusmv
so im safe if i just use those?
it can be safe. it really depends on the gatekeeper. if a "bad guy" is given a password (knowingly, or unknowingly) then your security is compromised.Originally Posted by meandyou2K5

you are safer if you are in a private hub, there is nothing saying they cant get into said private hub the same way you did

im sure you people heard about the DOJ lurking about.
now i believe they only target 100 gb hubs and only their owners, but whos to say small time USERS arent next?
im telling you people im scared shitless nowadays.
and speaking of bad people, on a music messageboard, they were talking about an owner falsely reporting that people were sharing illegal porn just for the fun of it.
Its a shame what this country has succumbt to (i know i spelled that word wrong).
heres a quote someone said on another board, maybee itll lighten things up:
"If they keep this up the prisons will surely be over run by us computer nerds in no time..We B runnin thangs up in there.. networks and shit..3 free meals.. Just pimpin with free internet access from the state!"
