    computer speed question

hey, there was this program that i used a while back something like speedxp or something like that and it helped speed up my computer majorly. Everytime my computer was running slow it would speed it up. I was wondering if anyone knows of any programs that will speed up my windows xp that are free? I have checked my computer, there are no spyware/adware on it or any viruses. I am currently running windows xp pro corp edition on a pentium 3 dell dimension. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I have ever found that worked to speed up my pc, without adding more ram, was to do some tweaking, and this site is a great help.

Maybe something like this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/foptimizer.html is what you want.

I don't use this myself, but I think it's what ur looking for.

I have used this website before and have seen thinks speed up a little bit by the way that was the first thing i did when i installed winxp pro corp onto my comp was go there and tweak it. I am looking for a program that actually speeds everything up without adding ram or tweaking more.

Increase Virtual Memory space. Run as few threads as possible. Kill MSN Messenger, Shut down all non-essential programs that reside in the system tray(Real,Quicktime,Mozilla, etc..).
Always run Adware, Spybot, Anti-virus regulary with updated definitions. Use Startup Control Panel 2.6 to remove Programs from starting when your computer boots. Usually Antivirus, and Firewall are all that should be allowed to boot.

Using nLite to remove things from windows makes for remarkable improvement in speed.

    http://nuhi.msfn.org/

I have a legally owned copy of XP SP1a, manually patched with Corp Dll's, then SP2. I then make a copy of that directory to make nLite versions with.

I remove almost everything, IE, Outlook Express, WMP (but I leave codecs), and many many more.

That's it for now. This list will be updated whenever I feel like it.

just researched this program on its homepage and it sounds great. you can remove msn messenger, internet explorer, windows media player, games etc. I really like it! thanks for the recommendation!

You idiots. If you'd take the time to look through the frickin' start menu, you'd notice several programs built in to Windows XP that will aid in "speeing up" your machine. I can't believe people still actually think programs like the ones you listed actually work. That's almost as stupid as thinking Netspape's "web accelerator" actually makes your internet connection more broad.

DwarfBaby had the most intelligent posts, thus far. Although, if "speed" is what you're looking for, I don't suggest using any anti virus program on the market, nor any of the other BS crap people would like you to believe "protects" your system. They will all undoubtably slow shit down.

Additionally, without the execution of an... executable, your adware and spyware come from those ignorant, Microsoft derived heaps of shit in Internet Explorer called Active X controls. Try using Mozilla Firefox as your primary browser, and see the difference.

Most computer problems aren't computer problems at all. They are pbkac errors - which, for those of you who don't know, means problem between the keyboard and chair errors. If you're not a complete idiot when you use your computer, then you won't have problems like that.
