ripping dvds to cds

hey

i have been looking all over the web to get a free program that allows me to rip dvds to cds (perferbelly under 700mb so it fits on a single cd..). i haven't been able to find one. does anyone here know how i can do this?? sorry if i sound dumb, but i am new to this all

Well, I've never really done it, but it requires a lot of work. First, (if it's a commercial DVD), you need to decrypt the DVD. Under the DMCA, this is illegal, so finding software to do it can be difficult. Second, you then need to compress the video into a format that your VCD player can decode - for a full movie, you're looking at a couple of hours compressing.

The latest Nero has lots of cool little toys, including what you're looking for. You'll need DVD Decrypter for the first step, though.

There's all kinds of tools at these sites (mostly free) that can do what you want.

Also look into buying a Philips DVP642 (or similar) player. This bad boy can play everything...DivX/XviD, mpg,VCD, SVCD. Man, I really love this player.

Anyhow, more to your answer: You can rip your DVD as described by Ducttape... earlier. Smartripper is a good tool that I like for this (get it free at videohelp.com).

Then using VirtualDub (or similar prog) (also available for free at videohelp.com) you can encode it to VCD, SVCD, DivX/Xvid (or whatever codec you want) XviD works best for me cause it's nearly DVD quality and fits on one CDR. (Won't play in ordinary DVD players though...only ones like Philips I described above.) NOTE: If you want to use DivX or XviD you gotta install the codecs for this.

I then use Nero to burn to disc.

There are a lot of guides about how to do this at videohelp and doom9. It won't take you long to learn how to do it.

Truthfully xvid isn't even close to dvd quality,but it's still watchable nonetheless. :tilted

Depends on who encodes the video. It can be done with amazing results. Too bad alot of people don't know how to do it right. I'm better with Divx than Xvid.

When I was encoding movies to fit on cd,I also used DivX mostly. :gj

I've seen some pretty good rips before,but to say they were close to dvd quality is a stretch,maybe vhs.

Maybe some old movies that were just transferred to dvd without optimizing the video,hence they still look like they are on vhs;then that would be close.

When comparing MPEG and divx/Xvid it should be remembered most people use very low bitrates for Avi. MPEG2 is a way out dated compression. If you encoded a 4 gig Xvid video it would look damn good, it could even be better than DVD if you had a better source to rip from.

A 700meg AVI file can't compare to a 4 gig MPEG and It shouldn't be expected to do so.
