first of all i keep hearing about people being caught using bittorent ect., just curious, are these people that let it seed for like , hours after its completed? or people that only download 1 file once in a while, or people downloading multiples, or people just leeching, , ect., ??
and what isp's are giving all these notices, is it SBC, or Road Runner, ect.? Also, i under stand that torrenbits ect. bla bla has been shut down, does that mean they are being sued or just shut down to be on the safe side, and are their user list being looked at? just curious, im sure someone has allready asked all this,
The problem with using bittorent is that your ip address is exposed for all to see. The only way you can safely hide it is with a proxy, thats what I use and havent recieved any notices. Now as far as seeding goes as long as they have your ip address all they need is a small chunk of a file from you to confirm that you downloaded it. Sure its probably safer to terminate the download once you get it, that really isnt file sharing now is it? If we all had that attitude there wouldnt be much file sharing going on...................My advice is to learn how to use a proxy and make sure there overseas like China............
My advice don't worry carry on using Bit Torrent until something better comes along :santaOriginally Posted by dj_alibi
No notice yet. And I use BT a lot. My isp is SBC. They seem to have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy concerning most things.
My isps strategy is really interesting, What there doing is semi/blocking common ports used by file sharing programs, after aboout 75-100mbs they kill your internet connection forcing you to unplug your modem to reset it.....This according to a Comcast representative...."our position is simple we cannot permanently block ports we can however limit the amount of material downloaded from those ports"..........Later on in the conversation "comcast really doesnt want to fight any legal battle with the mpaa therfore we have every intention to cooperate with them without jeopardizing our client base"...........this is what was related to me during a phone conversation Thursday afternoon.
btw when using a proxy this still effects me a little, usually though the proxy stays up for a while especially when uploading...I think we can all conclude that this is a correct course of action by comcast...........alot of you may not like it, because its forcing you to do a little work, yet the cable companies WILL avoid lawsuits that's just good business.
Comcast is the cable provider where I live. That's why I have SBC Yahoo dsl.
So this is not limited to certain geographical areas? I thought as much........comcast sucks........funny thing I didnt start having problems until I downloaded a ton of material I have heard they have a secret limit as well. Then they shut you off permanently until you call them.......Originally Posted by rainbowdemon
I really don't know. When I first moved to this area, I found out that Comcast was the provider here. So I signed up with SBC. I never had Comcat. But I've heard too many bad things about them.So this is not limited to certain geographical areas?
Yea, at first I thought I had my configuration wrong so I checked everything, then I made a phone call and found out what was going on.........I have thought about dsl for right now I can maneuver around the issue by using a proxy........kinda sucks, nice that im protected when using one though.
I have G3 set to seed a torrent for 30 minutes after its down downloading. The timestamp on the warning I got was 2:33AM or something around there, it was in the half hour seed period. Im pretty sure you have to be seeding in order for them to get you.
But if you don't seed, BT is pointless.
rainbowdemon why no notice?Originally Posted by rainbowdemon
Is it voodoo, black magic or don't you download copyrighted material?
What is you advice to avoid receiving a notice?
I know it's not because your ISP stands alone excepting liabilty on your behalf so leading it not to send out infringement notices.
Hornet
I don't know. Just lucky, I guess.
Demon try to find out from people in your area what comcast is doing there. Then report back with the information in this thread thanks!Originally Posted by rainbowdemon
Hornet, isp's take a variety of positions when it comes to file sharing, some are more lax then others.......thats not to say a company like baytsp will one day send the demon a shut-off notice...........thats why its important to take precautions no matter what isp you use.
welll thanks for the reply's , i usually dont funk with movies but once in a while since im a dj i usually stick to music, but you would be suprised at how much some of the music really sucks.i do seed, but only if it worth it, and ill let it run til 100 % so its not like im snatchin n runnin, but im not "hangin out with party all night long " either . ive never had any problems with sbc either . i was just curious if it was like people that download 5 movies a day or whatever, i am familiar of the fact that your ip is shown, and yes thats like holding up a big sign saying "here i am" but maybe i should try this proxy thing, ive been reading about it for years, just been to lazy to mess with it (lol) but no one knows what the deal is with the sites that have been stopped, ? were they actaully sued? warned to shut down? user list checked? havnt heard (or seen) anyone mention this info
