transfer files from laptop - to - PC??

Hi guys,

I seriously need some help. For the past years I ve been using a laptop. However I just got a PC with a big HD and I want to transfer my files from the laptop to my PC. I am at a university campus -- so bandwith is not a problem at all. The problem is that the laptop and the PC use the internet without network/domain login. Thus, they are not connected in a LAN. And here is the problem, the univesrity has a shitty hardware firewall so nothing is visible in the outside internet. Lets say when i use emule -- I am firewalled, DC++ -- Im passive, almost all ports are blocked.

SO to transfer my files from the laptop to the PC it would have been easy just to use DC++ for example, however it does not support passive to passive connection, nor do any other p2p program i know

I tried today to mess with ftp servers but could not get anything working -- tried bulletproof ftp server and serv-u...

SO I was hoping guys u can give me some advice

There are software like PC Relocator, but if your Laptop & Desktop uses different versions of Windows, it is still a pain in the a$$, but it works! You can connect the two using, USB ports & Ethernet ports. Good luck.

Lan2P should do the trick set your router or firewall for your IP to the DMZ transfer er via ethernet its quite easy to allow windows to set up file sharing within your network of your two computers as well windows XP has a wizard specifically designed for this task firewall or not really. Theres lots of options to allow computer to computer transfers hell you could hook up a USB2.0 card in each PC or a Firewire Card and network em together that way as the cards are dam cheap on ebay and it'd be easy access as well but a router would do the trick fine as well just gotta make sure to configure it correctly and configure or temporarily shut them off to transfer the files.

Hope that helped a bit. In times like this its always wise to think about investing in an external USB2.0 hard drive makes for plug and play makes the information available on any computer as well as giving the the ability to swiftly transfer or copy data or take it to a frineds house to play the media over there. And easy disposal if you get raided by the file sharing federation :P~

u could set up a home network (temporarily) just to get the files u need. It's easy. Just make them part of the same workgroup (use something other than WORKGROUP) and make sure they both have file and printer sharing on. Share the folder(s) you want on your laptop and you're set.

Ok, what Im getting is this:

I have usb2 on both but so what -- I dont have a cable that on both sides could be plugged in usb2 port of the pc/laptop -- thus -- I need to buy another kind of usb2 cable.

Using the ethernet (cat 5 ) cable -- I need a router -- but I dont have a router...

I do have windows XP on both machines ..

Could anyone elaborate furder what I need to do?

you can always run yahoo messenger on both computers and then just transfer files

you can also connect the two computers with an ethernet cable ,,, no need for a router ,, just one cable to both computers (this has to be set up properly and i don't remember how to do it but you can play with it and it will work)

you can only do that with a crossover cable (which i doubt he has)

Yep Crossover cable, just get a small one, like a 3 or 5 foot one. THey should be less than $10 even at expensive stores like radio shack. If not than another , less popular method is that i'm guessing both your laptop and pc have serial ports. That being the case you can transfer data through there, it is horribly slow though compared to Ethernet. and one funny scenario, is if you are stuck somehow for a long time and need an emergency backup (unlike) , cant go to store. You should have floppies laying around and if hte laptop has a floppy drive and windoze, you can rar the shit out of the whole thing ur trying to send over, and split those rars into 1.44 mb pieces. Hell a lot a floppies, but its possible.

I actually used a 256MB thumbdrive to transfer over 10GB of music/data from my old computer in one room to my new computer in the other. Yes, it took about 40 trips, but the work was done. These days, the 512MB ones have come down in price to what was previously the price of the 256MB.
