    Music videos etc, legality

What is the legal status of sharing music videos and footage of gigs/concerts? I figure someone must own the copyrights to music videos, but there are websites which allow you to download plain .mpg files. Something like metalvideos.com or something, they had like the 20 latest metal videos to download, didn't state that it was legal but it's been around for a long time. They were all 'ripped' from TV.

With concerts and gigs, I know obviously ripped DVDs arent but what about things like footage that hasn't been released. For example, I can't find System Of A Down's set at Reading Festival 2000 to buy anywhere, but it's on kazaa, Pantera at Ozzfest2k is on ares but i havent seen it anywhere to buy. They're both professionally recorded by the venues, but if noone's selling them, noone's making a loss?

The web stretches far and wide across the globe.
Unless you're Microsoft or Lucas Arts, you probably don't have lawyers searching day and night for copyright violations.
