One of my favorite bands is Catherine Wheel.
They're on an indefinite hiatus now, after over 10 frustrating years of not breaking into the mainstream. They started out circa 1990 as an English shoegazer type outfit belting out a layered "wall of sound", but grew and evolved with each succeeding album. If I had to descibe them I would say they're like Radiohead and Pink Floyd thrown into a jar and shaken up. That's not giving them due credit though, as they are a highly original and talented group of musicians.
Factoid: Front man Rob Dickenson is the cousin of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickenson (yes.. THE Bruce Dickenson. Godda have more cowbell, baby)
A group of fans and unsigned bands have put together a completely legal set of tribute CDs, which are available for downloading at http://www.cwcovercomp.com/.
While some of the tracks are amateurish and poorly recorded, most are interesting and skillful takes on some of Catherine Wheel's best and obscure tunes.
I had a chance to see them live at a small venue in Michigan in the Summer of 2000 on their Wishville tour, shortly before they disbanded. It remains the best live set I've ever seen. Even in the midst of Napster and it's succesors, I always found the cash to support this group.

Catherine Wheel is indeed a fine, fine group. . . sadly underappreciated by the unwashed masses. I've got many of their (purchased) CD's, and have downloaded several more. Sad to hear they are on indefinite hiatus. :(

I've purchased all their CD's, most of the singles, and some vinyl.
Download those cover tracks while you can, because that site may not survive longer than the provider's first billing cycle.
