This is just cool:

Car makers BMW, Audi, Daimler Chrysler, Volkswagen, Renault and Fiat have won a German government grant to help develop the basis for a standard method for car-to-car wireless data.

The money will be used by Network on Wheels (NOW), a project run out of the University of Mannheim with the participation of Karlsruhe Technical University. NOW is funded in part by the German 'Ministry for R&D'; the Car2Car Communication Consortium, a non-profit organisation founded by said vehicle manufacturers; Siemens; NEC; and the Fraunhofer Institute, itself better known as the home of the MP3 format.

NOW is focusing on 802.11 technology and IPv6 to develop "inter-vehicle communication based on ad hoc networking principles". Essentially, it's exploring ways that moving vehicles can automatically set up temporary links with other cars, bikes and trucks in the vicinity, and share traffic information.

With routing capabilities, the whole thing could become a huge 'automobile Internet', with vehicles warning each other - and their drivers - about slow-downs, bad weather, accidents and other road problems.

or, since ipv6 uses a unique identifier for each object on the network, a great way to log and track the movements of everyone on the network

Security would be a huge issue... I doubt they could get this working when they say they plan to, they'll run into a lot of problems with security.

That's amazing, you could do a network chat in a traffic jam.. In these last 10 years, the technology has become very advanced - satelite internet in your car...amazing...just fantazing a little bit there.

I think this could be achieved without the use of IPv6. From what I understand, this is supposed to be used as a method of warning or mass information distrobution to those on highways. I can see cars assigning a local identification to eachother so that two vehicles can communicate without broadcasting to all vehicles in the area, but a static IP for each car is pointless.

the traffic report thing is a red herring, since i'd (and probably others) wire ahead that there was a nonexistent accident so i could get to work faster

Terrible idea in a way I really think the future is going to be hell at the rate were going nothing like hitting a deer or going off the road into a ditch and being asked for your insurance paper after the cop flys up "To make sure everything is alright" In some states your not required to have insurance or proof of insurance untill an accident occurs. And with this hows about the cop hearing you whisper to you friend put your seatbelt on before the cop gets to the car... There went that seatbelt ticket you coulda gotten out of.

Invasion of privacy the story of the future as the dam jails are crowded enough for petty chit eventually there will be a prison system far too big to support and our good old taxes will go up and up and up.

Theres a lot of petty crimes going on this very moment that aint really harming no one if joe blow wants to drive without his seat belt let em hell he can smoke or drink himself to death why not allow him to decide weather or not to wear a seatbelt.

I dunno but really the whole big brother is watching you thing is comming closer and closer to the truth. This is just another step in that direction.

I think the idea is cool. The day is fast approaching when all cars are monitored for "traffic safety". Car to car and road to car lans in exchange for automated driving is a good pay off. Using the in car lan to become big brother or deny access to your car is wrong.

If oil and gas prices keep increasing, bicycles might be the only way to "drive" until low cost hydrogen feul cell cars are mass produced and the oil monopolies have built a hydrogen distribution system.

automated cars look cool on tv, but nobody would ever buy one, as it would completely defeat the purpose of "driving"

why would you ride in an automated car for 20 hours when you can ride the same distance in an airplane for an hour or 2?

also, you being in an automated car doesn't change the fact that the other 99% of cars around you will not be automatic, as full adoption will take decades (how many people do you know that buy a new car every year?) while you ride around free of cares, some drunk in a late model will blast you off the road

there is no valid, sellable use for the technology that doesn't have some creepy big brother overtones
