Whatever you want to load at startup. The more you load, the more proccesses start running.

the average home computer should have about 20-30 processes running on startup. any more than that and its likely you have either a spyware problem or a bunch of unneccesary programs (real player, microsoft office) eating up your resources right off the bat.

anything you dont use often should not be autimatically starting up on bootup. And depends on the level or ram and processor power. with less ram you want less things running.

I have 2 in windows and not counting KDE/X/etc, 1 in Linux.

    Windows: AVG and Desktop Calendar
    Linux: superkaramba

since AVG is idle I dont know if it counts.

right now, not counting AVG/Desktop cal I have shareaza and opera running. No theme engines, no animated wallpapers... just shareaza and opera. azureus is on night watch and sometimes I'll close shareaza and fire up quintessential player. those are ones that are usually running.
