    Cable Modem connection drops after high volume of data transfer

    Hi,

    I have encountered a problem with my internet connection dropping after I started using emule for 2+ hours and downloading 25~35KB/s (even though I'm subscribed to an unlimited usage plan).

    This problem was first described in http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=23266 however, I decided to create a new thread as it was side-tracking from the original problem of slow-download and low-id.

    I was able to isolate the problem to my ISP or cable modem by removing my cable router and reproducing the problem.

    Does anyone has advice for this?

    1. Did you check to see your ISP has a firewall also?
    2. Did you try using different TCP & UDP ports, because some ISPs blocking those ports?

    I just got rid of cox because my connection keep kicking out, something it rarely did before. I figure it had to be some new policy at the ISP to stop file-sharing so i switched to bellsouth and saved money in the process. It's slow as hell but im not putting up with paying 50 a month to have the connection drop out after a couple hours or waking up the next morning to find out the connection cut out overnight. If I cant use my allotted bandwidth what the point in paying for it. Seems like Cox's head is getting too big and they think they can do whatever they want and not pay a price for it. I wish the damn government would give consumer more options in where we get our internet service. I'm sure our tax dollars went into putting those cable and phone lines in the ground; we should get something from it besides a screwing.

    Possiblity two, I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Oh, well i still saved money.

    Hi Que-em,

    I realised that if I didn't file-share for a few days, my cable connection will stay up for longer. But if I have been downloading alot, the connection will be slower and the it will go down every other hour.

    Guess I'm having the same problem with the ISP limiting the p2p file-sharing bandwidth. This sucks but I don't have much alternatives here as there are only 3 major ISPs here in Singapore and this is the cheapest.

    Well I'll add it could be noise in the line caused by bad connections or a bad ground. I had this problem with Charter. I finally called them up and they did a test to see if there was noise in the line and there was. The interference caused my connection to drop when I had a lot of traffic going for a short period of time. Charter had actually put a splitter in the line instead of running 2 lines and thats where the problem was. It may be worth calling them up or you might can just check all the connections yourself.

    Just going by reputation Singaporean isp's keep a REALLY tight rein on their customers. Sometimes they have strict monthly limits after which they slow you down to dial-up speeds (which would still technically be unlimited). Also they're known for invisible proxies and slower speeds for international traffic and who knows what else involving P2P.
