There are a couple of possibilities. The file you downloaded may need a codec you do not have. Will the file play in Windows Media Player? Is the file an MPEG? I have gotten that error when it is a copywrited file that was a WMV file that will not burn without the purchase of the codec. The latest version of Media Player will walk you through the purchase of the codec. If it is a MPEG or mpg, it may have an executable inside it where it accesses the internet, like a call to open explorer to access a web site. When you play the file in media play does it open IE for a web page? There are several possibilities. The file may be corrupt or bogus. Just some thoughts that may help.

Sounds like bad encoding. Sometimes you can recoded with TMPGEnc or use AVIFix.

maybe the audio is VBR (variable bit rate). I used VirtualDub if there's a problem with avi file and the program can view more info about it.
Sorry to tell you but you need to go up a step to xp or 2000, I had the same issue.
Windows98 runs FAT files ...basically a single file can only be about 32 mb and as DVDs are BIG you need something bigger
XP runs NTFS and they can handle BIG files
Nero probably knows this and thats why you may have had the error.
hope this gets you back on track
Burning shouldn't cause problem, if your burner has cache memory & underrun/overrun protection. If re-encoding however would requires fast cpu speed & RAMs. Also, if you can find the movie then you could find TMPGEnc, VirtualDub & AVIFix. Do a little p2p & google search, you'll learn to find resources in the future!
