the only idea i got is:
you're connected to a ed2k server, your search is "global" (all server).
so, when you start downloading it takes a little to get all the sources.
the turn from blue to red is simple: all users you're connected with left.
for the second question, change for local search (only the server you're connected).. or, better, go for some KAD search.
